SINGLE MEN’S CAMPS.
OPINION OF COUNTY COUNCILLORS.
“What is the use of gardens to single men if they now have to go to camps to earn their money,” queried the engineer (Mr Bond), at yesterday’s meeting of the Manawatu County Council, during a discussion on the Unemployment Board’s instructions regarding gardens for relief workers. Mr Drew (county clerk) said it looked as if the instructions applied to Palmerston North only, as he did not know of other centres receiving similar notification to that forwarded to Palmerston North.
Cr Iteid thought that it was perhaps only a temporary measure to deal with the flood repair work at Masterton, the chairman (Cr Barber) agreeing that this was probably the idea behind the movement.
Cr Perrett said he was rather surprised at the attitude taken up by the Palmerston North Unemployment Committee in regard to certain statements mado by the deputation waiting upon it on Monday. No challenge had been made to the speakers as to the qualification of the information and opinions advanced, and while nobody liked to see men going into camps it had to be remembered that it was simply an expedient to tide them over an awkward period. “A single man who won’t go into camp to get work is not worth giving work to,” stated Cr Boyce. The discussion then lapsed.
