RUGBY FOOTBALL
WIN FOR MANAWHENUA. SOLID, DASHI.sG FORWARDS. Per Press Association. STRATFORD, Sept. 1. The Manawhenua Rugby team beat Taranaki by 18 points to 14 to-day after a good game played on a greasy field. Taranaki were superior throughout the opening spell, but both backs and forwards or the Manawhenua team came to light with a vastiy-improved showing throughout the final spell. Manawhenua owe their victory principally to solid, dashing forwards. In the final spell the visiting backs handled the heavy ball much better, with the result that they were seen in several good combined efforts. Neither in the backs nor the forwards was Taranaki up to the expected standard. The game was fought hard, but seldom approached brilliant heights. The Manawhenua fuil-back, Barrett, was particularly safe in both handling and tackling; he was also responsible for good goal-kicking. On attack, Meta Johnston was the bright light of the visitors’ rearguard. Johnston’s speed made Bim dangerous whenever tfie play was in the Taranaki danger zone. The inside backs, Irving, Brainwell and Wasley, took time to settle down, but throughout the concluding spell they figured in a number of bright movements. Both Elliott and Cooke showed speed and dash on the wings. Among the visiting pack, which, on the play, was superior to Taranaki, Cooper, Mackenzie and Roddick were always in the picture. Kinsella and F. Young proved a couple of dashing wingers for Taranaki, but. Haughton had an off-day in attack, so these two fast men did not get many openings through combined movements. Petty, at full-back, did not compare favourably with the Alj Black, Collins, who figured as an emergency. The All Black Clarke, Wills and Lusk were the most prominent Taranaki forwards.
The Manawhenua scorers were Cooper, Johnston, Wasley and Elliott; Barret converted three tries. For Taranaki, F. Young and Kinsella scored, and F. Y'oung converted one try and kicked two penalties. Mr L. S. Clapham was the referee. MANAWATU COMPETITIONS. TO-MORROW'S CONTESTS.
