EAST AFRICA.
REPORT ON CLOSER UNION. (British Official "Wireless.) RUGBY, Aug. 25. Correspondence between the Colonial Office and the Governors of Kenya, Tanganyika, Nyasaland, and Northern Rhodesia and the British. Resident at Zanzibar, concerning a report on closer union in East Africa, has been published.
On tho main issue the committee which reported had advised that it was not tho time for far-reaching steps in tho direction of political or constitutional union. It recommended, however, that the Governors’ Conference should bo used to ensure a continuance of effective co-operation in regard to matters of common interest in East Africa. Letters expressing tho views of the Governors are followed by a dispatch from tho Colonial Secretary, dated July 13, in which Sir Philip CuuhffeLister accepts the committee’s view on the main issues. The importance of effective co-opera-tion in regard to transport matters and communications generally, n.nd in matters of research, is emphasised, and it is stated that it will be the duty of the conference of Governors to ensure the maintenance of such co-opera-tion.
