MANAWATU RABBIT BOARD.
MONTHLY MEETING. (From Our Own Correspondent.) FOXTON. Aug. 26. Tbo monthlv meeting of the Manawatu Rabbit Board'was held on Thursday morning, presided over by Mr B. G. Gower (chairman). Also present were Messrs Barber. McKelvie and Grammar. A letter was received from tho Audit Department notifying the board that the wages tax of Id on every Is Sd is payable on wages or salaries received since May 1. 1962, although earned prior to that date. The letter caused considerable comment. 3lr Barber said tho Manawatu County Council was fighting the demand. The department was endeavouring to collect on local bodvs - wages for an extra month, as it was well known that local body accounts were not passed for payment until the month after they were due. The secretary said he thought 'the Rabbit Board was quite all right. It was decided to protest against the demand and to forward a copy of the letter to Messrs J. Linklator, J. A. Nash and \Y. IT. Field M.P. s. Tho secretary reported that the Department had sent in a claim for cyanide. The position was that cyanide had been purchased at a price and retailed accordingly to tho ratepayers of the district. The department now found that it had made a mistake in the price and desired that the Board pay a further sum for the poison. Mr Barber said he did not see how the board could now recover the , extra money as the evanido had been disposed of. It was decided to advise the department to this effect. The inspector reported as follows: I have been engaged in a general inspection of properties, more especially in following up the poisonings carried out on cover country. In the great majority of cases the results have been successful, and where this has not been the case further poisonings have been advised and in most cases have been completed. On certain cover properties on which there are still traces 1 of rabbits to be found it will be necessary i to carry out a phosphorised pollard poisoning at 'the beginning of next month. OwnI ers of such properties so far inspected have ! been advised to do this work, and fresh j supplies of phosphorised pollard are nowon Land. During the course of inspection it has been found that farmers are not carrying out necessary rabbit destruction work until they have been requested to do so. It is most necessary to keen breed- [ ing down at this time of the year. I would therefore request farmers to carrv out fumigation ot their properties immediately and to see that all working burrows are kept closed. The land is in perfect condition for such work and it should regularly be aitended to. The clearing of gorsc is being carried out at pre ; sent on quite a number of properties and especially good work has been done in this connection in the Ohakea area. During the coming month I shall be. engaged in general inspection work both in regard to rabbit destruction and in seeing that further clearing of noxious weeds is carried out.” —The report was adopted.
