RACING NEWS

FROM STABLEAND COURSE. | (By "Binocular.") Tr is prol>ablc that Grecian Prince will do his spring racing in Australia, although plans have not been finalised. Shelter, a half-sister by Silverado to Shntter. is to take the place of Dunraven in F. L>. Jones's stable at Riccarton. Gold Dawn is reported to be galloping in attractive fashion at New Plymouth. She registered the best six furlongs gallop on a recent morning. Wise Choice has rejoined the active ranks at Riccarton, having been taken in hand again by R. Ellis. She is stated to have benefited greatly by the spell. Sunny Bachelor, the brother to Sunny Sky, together with Lordly Knight and Hunter's Moon, who wero all winners at the Gisborne meeting, are to race at the Avondale meeting. The Palmcrston North horseman, R. C. Miles, has been on the inactive list for some little time a.s the result of a bout of influenza. However, lie recovered sufficiently to attend the Taranaki Hunt meeting today where he rode Trouble in his engagement.

Ono of the New Zealand division at present in Australia who is said to be showing promise in Easy Money. He is a bay colt by Paper Money from Piquant. a mare broil in England in 1921, by Somme Kiss from Crundel! Chick, imported and raced by Mr V. Riddiford. Rosshire, who was recently a member of J. T. Jamieson’s team in Sydney, is back again with F. li. Pope at Takanini. His weak leg is to bo treated and it will be decided whether lie is worth persevering with. The death has occurred of the eight-year-old Paper Money mare Mandy. She was only retired to the stud last season, but after wintering well she sickened and died. At the time she was in foal, so the loss is doubly unfortunate. Riccarton reports states that G. Murray Avnsley has a fine big two-year-old gelding by Night Raid—Liege Lady that is showing very fair form. Good to look at, lie possesses a far reaching stride that is sure 1 to trouble his opponents when ho is ready to race. Bronzo Eagle, who will in future be trained by Hector Gray resumed active training tins week. The hunter Thespis, who won a double at Ellorslio last Saturday, has since joined Gray's team at Takanini. Two-vear-old racing in Victoria and NewSouth Wales is not permitted before October 1. In South Australia, however, the racing law is different and it begins in August. Consequently, the first two-year-old raco of the season in the Commonwealth was run in Adelaide last, Saturday. Udaipur, '.he Blandford filly who won the Oaks for the Aga Khan, has now captured £13,655 in stakes this season, Next on the winning list arc April the Fifth £10,523, Orwell £9299, Andrea £8378, and Kandy £8034. They are all three-year-olds. Writing of last season’s two-year-olds, “Chiron,” in the Australasian, says: “It looks as though the New Zealand colt Gaino Carrington will win our Derbies this year unless there is a really good stayer among the youngsters who wero not seriously trained last season.” He does not think that Kuvera, the Australian champion two-year-old of the autumn, will stay. CORNIAX RETIRES. As Corinax showed signs of weakness after his raco in tho Jellicoc Handicap it

lias been decided not to risk a complete breakdown, but to permanently retire the lino staying son of Magpie. It is a wellknown fact that Corinax, being attocted in one eye, could not race in Sydney, and that lie was cheaply acquired by J. Williamson; that subsequently the Ellcrslie trainer offered to exchange him for six Jersey heifers, but that tho Dargaville farmer concerned did not accept the offer, and that Corinax altogether won over £7OOO for his owner. Courage was the most notable trait in Corinax’s make-up, and it is pleasing to be able to say that his declining years will be spent in a home where he will be well cared for. His most strenuous work in future will be to net as a children’s hack. He leaves the turf still a good horse, but not sound enough to stand the bard training such a gross fellow requires. NEA LAP SOLD. i TO GO TO AMERICA. Nea Lap, sister to the famous Pltar Lap, has been sold to an American owner, tho well-known polo and racing enthusiast, Mr J. 11. Whitney, of New York, lhe purchaser was advised of tho fact that as a racing proposition Nea Lap did not come nnvwhere near the class of Phur Lap, but a reply was received that her stud value was tlie main view. Nea Lap, who is now a five-year-old, was purchased as a yearling at the Trcntliam sales for only GOgns. byMr J. J- Gatenbv, of Hastings. At that time the stock of Night Haiti bad to make a name, but it was not long before Phar Lap and Nightmareh revealed their sterling qualities, and Mr Gatenbv received inquiries for Nea Lap from Australia.
