MAYOR OF NEW YORK.

ASKED TO ANSWER GRAFT CHARGES. Tho protracted investigation of the municipal government of New York City approached a dramatic culmination on August 11, when the Mayor (Mr Walker) appeared before the State Governor (Air Roosevelt), who acted in his capacity of chief magistrate. Air Roosevelt is trying to decide if Air Walker is fitted to continue as Alayor, or if he should be removed. The day’s activities were largely a discussion of legal technicalities, "although Air Walker made an impassioned appeal for the right to continue to hold office, in which he cited his blameless political career of more than 20 years.

Air Roosevelt, apparently in a desire to afford Air Walker every opportunity to defend Limselt. agreed, with reservations, to Air Walker’s contention that the witnesses at the Seabury investigation should be recalled. This is likely to extend the present hearing for a considerable time. Air Roosevelt’s position as Democratic Presidential nominee gives the case a national political importance, as a decision eithor way is sure to affect tlio vote. The removal of Air Walker would be a direct blow to the New York Democratic machine, but it would tend to strengthen its position in the south and west.
