RAILWAY FINANCES.

FALL IN EXPENDITURE. The net revenue of the Railways Department for the period between April 1 and July 23 was £196,720, according to figures published in the Gazette yesterday. The total revenue totalled £1,817,085, and expenditure £1,620,365.

Total revenue during the period fell by £176,839, as compared with the corresponding period of last year, but expenditure dropped by £190.040. so that there was actually an improvement in net revenue of £13.201. The total railway operating revenue was £1,610,916, a decline of £162.098, there being decreases in passengers £71,000, parcels, luggage, and mails £17,356, goods £68.000, and lalxmr and demurrage £SOOO. The number of passengers carried fell by 279,757 to 5,598,004, goods traffic declining by 57,508 tons to 1,807.215 tons. Passengers carried on road motor services increased by 102.090 to 844,755, but revenue fell by £624 to £23,707.
