RANGITIKEI.
MARTON, Aug. 23. The primary schools’ quadrangular Rugby football tournament progressed a further stage yesterday, in unpleasant woather conditions. The results were a surprise to all, the teams, with the exception of Hutt, showing a complete reversal of Saturday’s form. Hutt Valley beat Horowlienua by 13 points only, whereas ltangitikei defeated Horowlienua with a 44 points margin on Saturday. Taranaki, however, made amends for their defeat by Hutt Valley on Saturday by defeating Rangitikei by 9 points to nil Tho Marton Borough Council met last evening, tho Mayor, Mr F. Burnell, presiding. Also present were Crs. Gregory, Barton, Mclndoe, Honeyman, Langstone, Gorrio, Sicoly and Williams. A letter was received from the acting Minister of transport, acknowledging receipt of council s letter relating to the Transport Licensing Act, 1931, stating that the Council’s opinion will have the careful consideration of tho Government. —Received. Air R. A. Griffin wroto asking permission to use the council’s vacant section on Cubbabballa and Lyons Streets in return for tho repairing of the fences, and the grubbing of gorse. —Granted for 12 months provided the section is not required for loading premises. A letter was received from tho _ Treasury with reference to the mam dramago loan of £1,723 2s, stating that no portion of the loan had been paid off, tho half-yearly-payments consisting of interest only, but provided payments are kept up to date, the council’s liability will cease on February 1, 1945 At a special meeting motions authorising loans of £B7OO and £2700 were carried, and will be submitted to a special meeting of the council to be hold on September 20. On the recommendations of the visiting committee, tho light near the intorscction iof Lyon and Cuba Streets is to bo moved so as to light up the corner. That tho Hawkestono Road bridge across the Tutaenui Stream is m a precarious state and dangerous to heavy traffic was reported to tho council. by Or. A. A. Mclndoe. Tho two outer stringers wero completely gone, ho said, wlulo tho docking also was rotten. Tho estimated cost of repairs would bo £l5O-£IOO. for materials and £SO for labour. The stringers alone, of heart totara, would cost £l2 each approximately. The overseer, Mr V. R. Brant, said that he had taken it upon himself to restrict loads on the bridge to two tons as it was liable to collapso under a heavv weight.—This action was approved. It was decided to obtain quotations for the proposod repairs. Cr. Mclndoe was accorded a vote of thanks for his report and advice.
