CONDEMNED NAZIS
APPEAL FOR PARDON. HERR HITLER’S ACTION. INTERVIEW WITH CHANCELLOR. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received August 24, 8.40 a.in. BERLIN, Aug. 23. The Frankfurter Zeitung says that President Hindenburg and the Cabinet have decided to dissolve the Reichstag immediately it meets on August 30, to avert a defeat on a vote of want of confidence.
Herr Hitler is reported to be hastening personally to impress on Herr von Papen, the Chancellor, the necessity of pardoning the live men condemned, at Bouthen lor murdering a Communist. The majority of the newspapers liopo for commutations. Tho Catholic Germania insists that tho misled masses must bo shown that tho State and the law are above political parties. The Democratic Press expresses the opinion that tho verdict itself is sufficient warning and urges commutation.
THREAT BY HITLERITE. BERLIN, Aug. 22. A prominent Hitlerite says: “If they shoot our men thero will be no holding our storm troops.” It is believed in Government circles that thero will bo no reprieve. WAR ON GOVERNMENT. LONDON, Aug. 23. “In view of the monstrous verdict I feel myself bound to you comrades in absolute loyalty. Your liberty is now a question of our honour. It is our duty to fight against the Government which rendered possible such happenings,” declares Herr Hitler in a personal telegram to tho five condemned men.
This is regarded as a declaration of wa.r on tho Government and a dangerous encouragement to Herr Hitler s followers, who ordinarily are hard to keep in check. Herr Goehbels, tho Nazis’ Berlin leader, says: “We have no reason to glorify terrorism, but tho sentences must not bo fulfilled. They are tantamount to a blow in National Germany’s face.”
Tho newspaper Y orwaerts says that Dr. Papen “must find a way to get rid of the bloody ghosts conjured up by tho removal of the ban on Nazi uniforms. Pardoning tho condemned men would mean the death of the emergency decrees.”
