AUSTRALIA AND NEW ZEALAND. ■INFLUENCE ON EMPLOYMENT. : PROPORTION OF PRODUCERS. '(United Press Association. —By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) ? Received August 24, 9.10 a.m. SYDNEY, Aug. 24. A paper on the population factors affecting employment read, at tho Science Congress revealed that only 57 per cent, of Australia’s bread winners wore engaged in actual production. Commerce anil transport absorbed 24 per cent, and professional and domestic occupations about 18 per cent. :Tho high proportion in commerce and transport necessarily contributed to the high costs which handicapped Australian production. I Tho paper was prepared by Mr H. lExley. He calculated that, for every 100 producers in New Zealand, there were 83 non-producers. The position in both countries', he contended, was unhealthy and inimical to progress.
