FOXTON.

(from Our Own Correspondent.) FOXTON, Aug. 23. A l*ox ton motorist had an unenviable experience while motoring from \\ ehiugton to Foxton on Sunday afternoon, no wau about to drive over the Waikanae railway crossing when one of the ironi wheels of his car came oil and the trout of the car, dropping down the axle, caused the hack to swing round and the vehicic swerved over the line and came to rest cross the cattle stops and on the line. A train was at the station and a motorist who happened on the scene immediately after the mishap was dispatched to notily the engine-driver of the accident. He tailed to reach tho station before tho train pulled out, however, and the next thing the driver of the damaged car knew was that the train was bearing down on the crossing. A travelling football team arrived on the scene fortunately and the members, sizing up the position, lost little time in getting out of their conveyance and idling the car bodily clear of the line a lew minutes before the train reached the crossing.

Out of the fifteen Foxton single men selected by the Foxton Unemployment Committee to enter tho the relief camps at J’angimoana and Alakowhai, yesterday morning, only two reported at the appointed hour. Those workers were conveyed to their destination and the remainder, many of whom were about town at tho time, have been struck off the unemployment register as, according to tho ruling of the noard, they are not eligible for relief work after once having refused to enter camp without a reasonable excuse.

Hornblow endorsed Air Christie’s remarks. Airs Adams, as the president for the past two years, had undoubtedly contributed of her nest and was deserving of every possible commendation. Airs Adams, in aeknowlodging the gift and the remarks, said that she had loved the work and had derived a great deal of pleasure both from the Plunket Society and Salvation Army Corps with which who had also been actively associated. .Lust evening -Mr and Mrs J. Barber (chairman of the Alaiiawatu County Council) endorsed the previous speaker’s remarks and expressed the regret of the farming community and County officials that such an obliging oncer ns Air Alartin bad been transferred from Koxton. Air Alartin suitably replied. The usual bi-monthly meeting of the Plunket Society was hold on Alonday afternoon. The nurse’s report was read and showed 153 -visits lor July.
