CITY BAND CONDUCTOR.

(To the Editor.)

Sir,—l notice in this evening’s “Standard” a request by. "First Valve” tor information regarding the method usually adopted in electing a band conductor. First of all, supposing the position to be honorary, the committee call lor nominations and, as a wise committee, always select the best. Each nomination | should be accompanied by copies of testimonials and also a summary of past experience. If necessary, a short list of, say, three should eventually be drawn up, based on past experience and ability to teach, according to testimonials submitted. Each of those in this list should then be given a trial in order to decide which one is best in practical work, but on no account should a candidate be allowed to vote. If a member of the committee allows himself to be nominated lor the conductorship, he automatically ceases to be a member of that committee, and it is very unfair to the other nominees if he 'is allowed to vote, as it is possible for him to. vote himself into the position of conductor. There is in mv opinion only one hard and fast rule required—that is, every, mail off scratch and let the best man win.—l am, etc. BANDSMAN.
