NORTHERN CLUB

ANNUAL MEETING. ’The annual meeting of the Northern Bowling, Croquet and Tennis ! Club was held last night, when the : retiring president, Mr A. P. Stuart,: presided over a large gathering. | The chairman took the opportunity h at the outset to express his pleasure’ at the large number present, which,! he thought, was the largest muster f the club had ever had at an annual meeting, and it promised well for the : incoming season. ! Mr J. A. Nash, M.P., president of the Manawatu Bowling Centre, who was in attendance, was extended a welcome by the chairman. The centre, J stated Mr' Nash, had enjoyed a good season and he was pleased to learn . that the visit to Wellington had been enjo3-ed by the Northern Club mem- ; l>ers. For the first occasion visits , had been paid to Masterton and Carterton, with an equal measure of success. Mr Nash hoped that the ceil- ] tre’s introduction of a howl testing machine had met with the approval of , the club and lie predicted that in the future the bowls used in evening tourneys would have to he tested. In commenting upon the great strides the clubs playing on municipal , grounds had made Mir Nash stated that it had been a wise move, for they were catering for not only the present generation hut for future. r i he annual report (previously published in the “Standard”) and the balance sheet were rend and adopted. The latter ( showed that the year was begun with . a credit balance of £3O os 7d and j had closed with one of £3O Os lOd. | The chairman mentioned that quite a ' few of tho liabilities figuring in the balance-sheet would not ho recurring during tho coming season. A very pleasing feature was that every mem- , her of the club was financial, an indication of their enthusiasm. CROQUET SECTION. 'i The secretary of the croquet section (Mrs Brown) reported that the membership was 36 and one “honorary . member. The season was an excep- . tionally fine one and play very keen, | Mrs Simpson was runner-up in the Dominion ladies’ championship, in |: the North Island tournament Mrs . Langford and partner were runners- : up, while Mrs Langford won the handicap singles in the Manawatu tournament. The Pollock Stars were r I won by Mesclames Simpson and Lang- ] I ford; 'the Corbridge Stars by Mes- ; dames Simpson and Dickel, and the 1 Gilbert Hoops, belonging to the Man- < gatera (Dannevirke) Club were held 1 by Mesdantes Garner and Dickel. Mrs ( Langford was the club s representa- ] five in the Manawatu silvor button j competitions. In the club competi- ( tions the Lawrie Cup was won by Mrs ( C. Bryan and the Bryant Cup by Mrs ■, Anderson. —Adopted. 1 TENNIS. t The secretary of the tennis section 5 (Mr C. U. Plimmer) reported that , I the system of internal matches instead of joining in the association s |" inter-club competitions had proved I most successful. Jhe club, however, = participated in a few friendly inter- - club games when it was the general . opinion that the standard of play was high. The winners of the various inter-club competitions were: Men’s • championship singles, C. Beattie; (( ladies’ championship singles, Miss J. 1 Mcßae; men’s championship doubles. 1 E. R. Harris and C. J. Sharman) reported , that there was a distinct improvement in the standard ot play, notably , in the Dixon Cup challenges, tlie club earning the honour of having its:~ name engraved on the trophy for the ~ first occasion. \ isits to outside , clubs proved most successful, the . Northern players having won 15 of the < 25 games in the Takaro lerake Cup. The club’s benefit gala in aid of the ~ unemployment fund saw a substantial amount raised, the competition D being won by Air J. Kershaw, of the | ( Manawatu Club. Air C. Bryan, the i dub's singles champion, represented ;S the club in the champion of champions’ tournament. At the Easter tourney three pairs were entered. During the season progressive pairs were played, with considerable success. The visit of the Alanawatu Centre to Wellington was most enjoyable, two rinks from the club participating. —Adopted. ELECTION OF OFFICERS. The election of officers resulted: President, Air J. C. Young; vicepresidents, Mr A. P. Stuart (bowling), Mrs H M. Garner (croquet) and Mr j .15. R. Harris (tennis); general secie- J tary and treasurer, Air S. Stnnnaid, sectional secretaries, Airs H. Brown < (croquet), Alessrs W. Reid and R. 1 Bryan (tennis), and J. J. Sharman 1 (bowling); lion, auditor, Air H. L. Thurtle; ground committee, Alessrs < R AlcKee (bowling). J. Aiuggeridge (tennis) and Airs R. Simpson (cro- 1

quet). Three new members were elected to the tennis section. The customary honorarium was voted to the secretary-treasurer, while a bonus was voted to the caietaker in recognition of his services. A proposal that a reduction he made in the subscriptions in the different sections was discussed, but when put to the meeting was overwhelmingly lost. A ballot was conducted to determine the seven debenture holders to whom a return of £1 each would bo made. The chairman mentioned that it had been possible to return no less than £2l as a result of the card evenings which bad been held during the past two or three months. Air It. H. Stallard moved a hearty vote of thanks to tho entertainment committee for its splendid efforts in the diretcion of liquidating the liabilities of the club. It was made a recommendation to tho general committee that, provided the weather permitted, the season he opened as early as possible in October. ~ , ~ . . A tribute was paid by the chairman to*the excellent work rendered by the various committees, the officers and the Press, a hearty vote of thanks being extended- to them, while a vote of appreciation was extended to the chairman in turn. Supper was partaken of at ihe termination of business, while Mr .T. A. Nash M.P., conducted a community sing to the pleasure of all.
