EDUCATION BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETING HELD. The Wanganui Education Board met yesterday afternoon, there being present, Messrs E. F. Hemingway (chairman), Aiken, Benefield, Dukeson, Munro, Tingey, Hornblow. Oram, Coleman, Colonel J. H. Whyte. Mr Hemingway was elected chairman for the ensuing year. Colonel Whyte was welcomed to the board, as a new member.

The Education Department advised that as the Greatford School had hovered for years lietween being a grade 2 or a grade 3 school it was advisable that no additional classroom he built at present. It was decided that plans for an additional classroom at Parewanui be forwarded to the Education Department. It was decided that alterations be carried out to the washhouse at Palmerston North Technical School.

Although the negotiations to dispose of the six rolled steel joists front the Central School were not successful, the architect is hopeful that they may be disposed of later. It was decided that in order to prevent deterioration they should be covered and. held in safe keeping until such time as a sale is effected. Their present-day value is £360.

Great satisfaction was expressed that the Audit Department had returned the balance-sheet for the year 1931 without a tag. The amount represented was £177,070. It was decided to continue to lake advantage of No. 10 unemployment scheme.

L lie architect was asked to report on the chimneys at Carnarvon ana on the advisability of leasing the school reserve at Table Flat. it was decided that a fence be erected at Awnhuri School and that a general clean-up of the school grounds be

made. The architect reported, that general repairs costing £3 had been effected to the school buildings at Ohakea and Newbury. Minor repairs had been carried out at Apiti and a small work was in hand at Sanson. Next month it was proposed to re-cover the floor of the College Street School and to carry out repairs to the Carnarvon School.
