DAVIS CUP
FRENCHMEN START WELL. WIN OPENING MATCHES. • BOROTRA’S SENSATIONAL GAME. (United Press Association—By Electric ■Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received July 30, 9.20 a.m. PARIS, July 29. The challenge round matches of the Davis Cup commenced to-day at Auteil, between United States and France, France winning both singles. The matches were witnessed by a record crowd, including the President (M. Lebrun) and Mr Dwight Davis, donor of the Cup. Details of the play are:— Borotra (France) beat Vines (U.S.) 6—2, 6—4, 3—6, 6—4. Cochet (Franoe) beat Allison (U.S.) 5—7, 7—5, 7—5, 6—2. VETERAN AND YOUNGSTER. Both matches were sensational. They were played amid (an almost ungovernable uproar.. Borotra, the veteran, meeting a youngster noted for his virility and lightning speed, found form greater than ever his compatriots hoped for. He took the services and drives of Vines which defeated every opponent at Wimbledon, exhibited wonderful court craft, and showed enough inimitable dash and fireworks to disturb the American’s equanimity and spoil his winning touch. Vines was obviously nervous and twice double faulted in critical games in the second and third sets which were played with terrific speed. Bolrotra, refreshed after a rest, revealed fresh wonders in strategy and, with victory in sight, appeared inspired in his spectacular returns. He had to be assisted from the court exhausted after the final rally. ALLISON OUTMANOUVRED.
Cochet was below his form in the first set against Allison, but outmanouvred the American in the second set and, improving in the third and fourth, apparently won when he wanted to. Both were spasmodically brilliant.
