GOLD PROSPECTING.
POSITION OF LAND OWNERS. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, May 18. The position of gold prospectors on farm lands was made plain by the Minister of Agriculture, lion. C. E. Macmillan, in a letter read to-day at a meeting of the Dominion Executive of the Tanners’ Union.
Aliy grant made by. the Warden, the Minister said, was subject to a statutory condition requiring the bolder of a grant to recompense the owners of freehold land for any damages that might be caused in consequence of shaft sinking or boring. Dredging claims were subject to the consent of the Alines Alinister, and it had been the practice to investigate carefully the effect of dredging, and in some cases special conditions had been imposed, with the object of protecting the surface of the land applied for or restoring fhe same by depositing spoil on the top of tailings. It was his intention to visit the' goldfields and see for himself tho results of dredging. Later the advisability of amending the law or otherwise would be carefully considered by the Government.
