SHANNON
(From Our Own Correspondent.) SHANNON, May 19. The ordinary meeting of tho Borough Council was held on Tuesday evening: Present: The Mayor (Mr E. Butt), Crs. Hvdo, Clayton, Hook, Thwaites, Currun, junr., Anderson, Radford and Curran, senr. A circular memorandum was received from tho Main Highways Board stating that on repeated occasions tho board has notified local bodies that, where expenditure is incurred beyond the authority issued for highway work of any description, the.board will not hold itself responsible to pay a subsidy on tho exoess expenditure. The board’s finances this year had been so severely curtailed by Parliament that the most rigid control must bo exorcised and if expenditure was undertaken without the board’s authority local bodies must not expect assistance from main highways funds. It was anticipated that the economic situation would bo reflected in a reduction in traffic on the highways this year with a corresponding reduction in maintenance costs, but without a reduction in the standard of maintenance.—Received. A letter was re. ceived from tho secretary, of tho Palmerston North Hospital Board stating that it has not up to the present boon possible to advise just what tho Government’s intention is ns regards hospital boards’ subsidies and consequently was unable to advise definitely what tho amount of the levy on Shannon urea for the year would be. A schedule forwarded, recently adopted by the board, and giving the levy which is likely to bo finally agreed on showed a furthor reduction on hut year's levy, 1931-32 being £l5O 18s 7d and 1932-33 £llO 6s lOd. With reference to the council’s letter regarding Shannon’s share of the proceeds deriveci from tho disposal of material from the old Shannon Bridge, tho clerk of the Horowhenua County Council replied that the chairman ana clerk will confer with representatives of tho borough on tho matter. The secretary of tho Horowhenua Rugby District Council wrote asking the council to re-open the matter of rent for the Domain. The secretary pointed out that no charge is to be made for ladies at competition games and the charge for junior games has been reduced from ono shilling to sixpence. No doubt at tho last council meeting it looked as though tho Rugby Committee was increasing its admission charges and seeking a lower rental and possibly it influenced the council in its decision. Resolved that the charge be 10 per cent on gross gate takings. A letter was received trom tne district engineer, Public Works Department, stating that the Main Highways Board has approvod of a £2 for £1 subsidy being mado available to enablo the council to complete the surfacing work on the borough main highways at an estimated cost ot £4OO. The council resolved to disposo of horses and plant and let a contract for metalling the borough ronds, the metal to be dehvored and spread as required at 4s 9d per yard. A reduction of 25 per cent in the rate charged was made to consumers of water outside the borough. It was resolved to support the Medical Officer of Health’s suggestion that the plumbing and drainage regulations mado under the Health Act, 1920, be made operative in the Shannon Borough.
