NAVAL DEFENCE

EXPENDITURE ON SINGAPORE BASE. MR FORBES’S STATESIENT. Per Press Association. AVELLINGTON, 51ay 18. Ht. Hon. G. AV. Forbes stated today that the Government had decided not to accept the recommendation of tho National Expenditure Commission that the New Zealand naval defence force should be transferred to the control of tho British Government. It was intended to carry on under the present system. Referring to the commission’s recommendation that the expenditure on Singapore should be curtailed, 51r Forbes said that the Government did not intend to make any reduction at present. Tho annual payment had already been reduced from £125,000 to £IOO,000. It was intended to keep up that payment in the meantime. Tho Government, he said, had a definite assurance that the Singapore Base would be completed.
