PALMERSTON NORTH CITY COUNCIL.

RESERVES COMMITTEE. At the meeting of the Palmerston North City Council on Monday, the reserves committee recommended that certain steps be taken in connection with various municipal leases under the Municipal Corporations Act, 1920, and that certain offers by lessees be accepted or de. dined according to the conditions; that the Manawatu Hockey Association be grafted the use of the two outside areas at the Sportsground for the coming season at a rental of £5 for the season: it was decided that the association be also granted the use of one ground at Milverton Park for the ensuing year; that during the pleasure of the council, Mr *J. 11. Adam be granted the free use of approximately a quarter acre of land in Manawaroa Street adjoining his present leasehold on certain conditions; that the account rendered by Mr W. R. Bimie for £lO 10s, representing fee charged for valuation, etc., supplied, be recommended for payment. The committee reported that Mr A. Hopwood wrote applying for permisison to remove the cabbage trees growing on the roadway outside his property in Linton Street and agreeing to replace same with other trees; it was decided that the request bo granted provided. the work is carried out and the trees planted to the satisfaction of the curator; that, in accordance with the previous resolution of 'the council, Mr W. R. Birnio forwarded a return showing, suggested values and rentals for the now term of 21 years in respect of the leases expiring no June 1, 1932. Representing lessees affected under the Municipal Corporations Act, a deputation waited upon the council. The council’s statutory duty in respect to revaluations was explained to them, and they retired. The reports and recommendations of the committee were adopted. . GENERAL. The council decided to go into the matter of the box erected on tho post near 222 Broadway Avenue, also one on the corner of Main and Princess Streets, both being considered dangerous to pedestrians. The council accepted a tender at an indent value of £475 for supplies of 5 and 10 amp. electrical meters. ENGINEER’S REPORT. The pity engineer (Mr J.' R. Hughes) submitted his monthly report as follows: — “Street maintenance. following street surfaces have been given a coating of bitumen and chips: Featherston Street East (from Rangitikei to Wood Streets); Church Street (from Albert to Princess Streets); Broadway Avenue (from Ruahino Street to Victoria Avenue). Screened river metal to the extent of 155 i c. yards has been spread on several of the secondary streets. “Footpath maintenance. —The following footpaths have boen treated with tar and sand: Princess Street (from Grey to Ferguson Streets) Matipo Street, Konini Street, Albert Street (east side, from Ferguson to College Terracel (west side, 5

chains north of Te Awe Awe Street); Park Road (north side between Fitzherbert and Union Street); Ferguson Street (south side between West Street and Botanical Road); Nash Street (north side); Rangitane Street (both sides).

Mains.—Four-inch diameter cast iron pipes have been laid in ihe following streets: West Street (Church to Ferguson Streets), 13£ chains; Boundary Road (Russell Street towards Roy Street), 10£ chains; Manawatu Street (extended main towards Albert Street), 5 chains; Cieland Street (Snelson to MoGiffert Streets), 6£ chains. The one-inch main service to the camping grounds has been extended for a length of 400 feet to the new conveniences. 18-inch main Fitzherbert Avenue: Special connections have been made with the 4-inch main at Ferguson Street and 7-inch main at the Square, and the pipe line was filled with water and put under .to** on March 18.” The report was received.
