AUTUMN RACING

MANAWATU MEETING GOLD DAWN WINS THE HANDICAP It was particularly unfortunate that, with a magnificent programme to be presented at Awapuni to-day,.the weather should have broken although the rainfall was not sufficient to aifect the track to any material extent. However, they were typically autumn conditions even though, the rsturii to indifferent climatic conditions had the effect of restricting the attendance of patrons.

GOOD FIELDS. ■. I MEETING WELL SUPPORTED. Acceptance night had brought free support from owners of the very best of the Dominion’s thoroughbreds; indeed, it was recognised that the quality of the horses represented was far in advance of the fields presented at the autumn meeting of the club for many years past. In addition every event, with the exception of the Awapuni Cup, had filled exceptionally well, while there was a distinct possibility that the selection of the winner would prove unusually difficult. EASTERLY WINS HURDLES. The defections of Royal Lineage, Omeo and Baskier left the strong field of eleven runners in the Kurere Hurdles, for which Arrowhead wound up favourite from the Foxton candidate Balloon, with Easterly next., in request. Adventus and Tho Sun were the first to show out from Henry of Navarre and Avro, but after negotiating the first fence in the straight Henry of Navarro and Adventus were in charge from Balloon, Avro, Pahu and Easterly. Turning into the back Balloon ran to the front and was clear of Adventus and Henry of Navaree, with another gap to Arrowhead and Pahu as thov took the fence at the five-furlong post. Balloon momentarily lost his position a furlong later, but was again in charge with Henry of Navarro as they came across the top, Pahu, Arrowhead and Adventus being in close attendance. Approaching the final fence Easterly ran up fast and after landing over the fence, took charge from Balloon to hold off the latter in the run homo and win by a length. Pahu gave a surprising display to finish in third place two lengths away. ' Then came Arrowhead and Henry * of Navarro, both of whom had been well placed throughout. SUCCESS OF THE FAVOURITE. Thornproof and Gaysong were withdrawn from the Autumn Plate, leaving a field of 10. Riotous wound up favourite from the •outherncr Porlock, with fair support for Poschiera, although the last-named was having his first race. Porlock, from an outside position, began smartly to load Foreign Queen, Copper King, King Thomond and Riotous on to the course proper. However, within tho next furlong Foreign Queen had taken command from Porlock, .Riotous, King Thomond, Trayinela and Copper King. They turned lor home in the same order, but once landed into the straight Riotous ran to the front to win by one and a-half lengths from his fellow representative Headland, who got up in time to beat Foreign Queen by a neck. Copper King was fourth, with Porlock, Trader Horn and Melodrama next. GOLD DAWN PREVAILS. I In the absence of King Colossus, Grand Jury and Esteem tho field for tho Prince of Wales Handicap wa3 weakened considerably and with tho topweights out Easter Time camo into pronounced favour, with good support for High FaluTjn’ and Gold Dawn. Following a false start the field was despatched from a moving start, Chief Cook and Tigerism rushing to tho front from Easter Time as they passed through the straight. Easter Time moved up to Tigerism going into tho bock, with Chief Cook, Straightcourso, Gold Dawn and Jayson all bunched. Gold Dawn moved up to tho front approaching tho half mile peg, but Tigerism - refused to give way and the pair led Easter Time and Chief Cook to the turn for homo. Shrewd and High Falutin’ 0.11 being handily placed. They entered the straight in that order, but with heads straightened out for home. Gold Dawn ran to the front and over the final pinch had to stall off challenges from Shrewd, J'oie do Val and Foghorn, the last-named promising to be in the monoy at the distance. Gold Dawn secured the verdict by a head, with Joie de Val a neck away. Then came Tigerism, Jayson, and Chopin. After suffering at tho despatch Jayson finished strongly in fifth place.

ROYAL' BENGAL WINS EASILY. Tho defeotions of Royal Hunting and Alpinist, a pair of the top weights, weakened the fiold somewhat for the Woodhey Handicap, and in their absence Royal Bengal was made a good favourite from Seneschal, with surprising support for Lady Court. The field went off in a good lino, Pass On being tho first to show out, but after a furlong had been traversed Lady Court had joined the leador, with Orby’s Choice and Royal Bengal together ahead of Grand Review and the bunch. They came across tho top and into .the straight in that order, and inside the distance Lady Court drew clear from Pass On. However, the favourite then made his run and was pulling up at tho post, his winning margin being three-quarters of a length. Seneschal came over tho final pinch to beat Lady Court by half a length. Lady Ronald was fourth, with Gailpat next. RACING IN DETAIL. KARERE HURDLES HANDICAP, of 100 sovs. Second horse to receive 20 sovs. and third 10 sovs. One and a-half miles. 3 Mr C. R.
