HORSES AT AWAPUNI

FAST WORK ACCOMPLISHED. (By “Binocular.”) While tho weather conditions furnished something of a contrast to yesterday’s bright sunshine, the tracks were in good order at Awapuni this morning when a number of horses, more particularly tho visitors, did their final gallops. Both the outside of the course proper and the plough were in use, but the greater portion of tho galloping was carried out on the grass. Before breakfast the Great Easter Handicap winner, Autopay, and Weathcrstep, two fresh arrivals from Trentham, strode over a round on tho plough without being sent against tho watch. Both look in good order, although tho latter has been somewhat disappointing with tho colours up. Orby’s Choice, who scored a success at Masterton, was restricted to a short sprint. Tho chestnut gelding jumped off in front of tho threo furlongs peg on the plough and, timed from the two furlongs, ran this distahee in 25 secs.

Great Star, who claims engagements in both the Princo of Wales Handicap and tho J.M. Johnston Memorial Handicap, ran half a mile on tho grass in 53£- secs, while his stablo companion, Grand Review, fulfilled a similar task, but was not timed. Provided track conditions do not change. Great Star will in all probability bo found taking his placo in tho Princo of Wales field. .. Tho two jumpers, Omeo and Pangolin, strodo over six furlongs on the plough at a sound pace, but without being asked to give of their best. NORTHERNER’S GOOD EFFORT.

After breakfast practically all tho fast work was carried out on tho grass, . but with tho flags wide out the horses running considerably over tho correct distance. Goy (Yoitro) and Headland (Parsons) were partners over six # furlongs, running the first threo furlongs in 40 sees and the full distanco in 1.22 1-5. Goy, who works well in private, had the advantage at the finish. , Merry Hunter (Anderson), who has not raced for sorao considerable timo, was restricted to a three- furlongs sprint m company with Pass On (Parsons), tho task being accomplished in 38 secs. The former will not figure at tho meeting, but Pass On is one of tho minimum weighted candidates in tho Woodhey Hack Handicap. Freeze (L. J. Ellis), tho Sires’ Produce Stakes candidate, did not show the early speed expected and Saltpot (Thompson) had her measuro throughout, being wen clear at tho post after running halt a milo in 54sec. „ King Colossus (Voitre), although his ott hind leg looked somewhat enlarged as the result of a blister, appeared to gallop soundly enough when sent over seven furlongs with Tho Mirror (Wiggins). Ihey ran tho first furlong in 13 3-sscc, tho halt mile in 54 3-ssec, and the full journey in 1.34 35. . , Moutoa Treasury (Parsons), alone, jumped away at tho six furlongs post to run tho last five furlongs in 1.8, while Speedmint, tho Awapuni Cup candidate, also ran six furlongs alone in 1.21 2-5, after lea\ing tho first threo behind in 40scc. As tfio Catmint filly does not work well by himself, it could bo considered a satisfactory effort. . ... j The gallop of the morning was credited to High Comedy (Yoitre) and Ganpat (Walters), tho pair running three furlongs in 39 2-ssec, and five furlongs in 1.5 d-5. High Comedy looks somewhat robust and is a distinct contrast to his lighter framed companion. The two southerners, Fleeting Glance and Porlock, were together at tho end of a half milo gallop in 52 4-ssec while another Riccarton pair. Gay Crest (Brodie) and Winsome Hind (Voitre), ran six furlongs in 1.21. Winsome Hind cleared out crossing tho top, but Gay Crest closed up tho gap in tho run homo. It was, nevertheless, somewhat of a disappointing effort on tho part of tho Awapuni Cup candidate, but it is stated to be not unusual with him. , „ . ■ Gaswyn (Faulkner) set the pace for Fatearoa (Wiggins) and Decree Nisi (Voitre), but tho Gasbag gelding was still clear at tho finishing point, Decree Nisi beating Patearoa home. The halfmilo was run in 54scc, and tho seven fur--10"/homSircs’ Produce Stakes candidate, Tout lo Mond (Brodie) and the Cloverlea Nursery representative, Senegal (McDowell), were partners over half a mile which was run in 52 4-sscc. Tout Ic Mond finished too strongly for the local two-year-old. Seneschal (Voitre) had his stable companion, Riotous (McDowell) as a partner over six furlongs, the former having a half length advantage at the close after running tho distanco in 1.21 1-5. Lady Qncx (Wiggins) was restricted to a half milo sprint, the Johnston Memorial Handicap candidate coming homo in 52 2-5 sec. Her stable companions, Gibraltar (Wiggins), and Easter _ Timo (Voitre) wero speeded up over six furlongs and after running tho first threo in 37 2-SsCC, completed their task in tho very satisfactory timo of 1.18. Easter Timo received a kick at Masterton, but it docs not appear to have affected him. Capetown and Foghorn, with a couple of lightweights up, jumped off at tho six furlongs post on tho plough, but Foghorn retired after running about three furlongs, leaving Capetown to come homo in 1.20. This Capo Horn gelding appears to be improving. NIGHTMARCH ARRIVES.

Tho Awapuni Cup candidate, Nightmarch, who recently returned from Australia, came to Awapuni to-day from Trentham where ho has been quartered since his return. At Trentham yesterday morning ho ran six furlongs the reverse way on tho outsido of the course proper in 117. With Roy Reed still in Australia tho Night Raid horse will bo ridden hero by A. E. Ellis. SCRATCHINGS ANNOUNCED. Grand Jury, winner of the Masterton Gold Cup on Friday, ha 3 been scratched for his engagement in tho Princo of Wales Handicap. W. Stono’s two representatives, Alpinist and Thornproof, have gono south for the Nelson and Marlborough meetings.
