FEILDING

CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. / The quarterly meeting of the Feilding Chamber of Commerce was held last night, the president, Mr A. J. Kellow, being in the chair. About 30 members wero present. The resignation of Mr A. H. Sutton was received with regret, Mr Sutton having left the town to reside in Hunterville.—lt was decided to write to Mr Sutton expressing appreciation of his many good services to the town. A request was received from the Relief Workers’ Movement for permission for a deputation from the unemployed to wait on the chamber in order to lay before it certain views and to seek advice on others. The president explained that he had that day been in touch with the chairman of the movement and informed him that there was no opportunity of the deputation being heard at this meeting, but perhaps they could be heard next week. Mr Kellow understood that the relief workers did not have any complaints to make, but wished to explain to the chamber ceitain of their points of view and this could probably bo met by calling a meeting of the committee next week. TTiis was agreed to. The meeting then went into committee to hear an address by Mr R. M. Watson, S.M., on road communications. HOUSEHOLDERS’ MEETINGS. The annual meetings of householders were held last night in the Manchester and Lytton Street Schools. At Manchester Street, Mr P. *>• Desmond presided in the absence ot Mr G. J. Fitzpatrick and briefly reviewed the year’s activities. The secretary. Mr J. Campbell, reported that the finances were sound, a credit or about £4l being shown. The bulk ot this amount was earmarked for a special purpose in regard to school improvement. The meeting considered the credit balance very satisfactory. There not being sufficient nominations to fill the vacancies on the committee, the following were declared elected:—Mesdames Fitzpatrick and McDowall, Messrs J. Campbell, P. B. Desmond, T. S. Goldsmith, S. McDowall, E. Hosking and G. J. Fitzpatrick. It is the intention of the committee to recommend to the Wanganui Education Board that Mr T. K. Hay be appointed to the vacancy. LYTTON STREET.

Mr Jas. Penney presided at Lytton Street School, when over 20 parents were present. The annual report of the committee (published yesterday) was adopted and, there being no election necessary, the following were declared the committee: —Mesdames P. Pearson and- M. Green, Messrs W. G. Short, J. Penney, N. G'. Harding. J. S. Tingev, L. D. Miller, J. B. Stewart and H. Parsonage. It was decided to make representations to the Government asking that the section of tho Economy Commission’s report dealing with the raising of the school entrance from five to six years be not adhered to. Support was given to a petition from the Auckland Primary Schools’ Association requesting that the Government take charge of and let by tender the supply of books to the schools. PARENTS’ ASSOCIATION. Subsequent to the householders’ meeting at Lytton Street the Parents’ Association of the school met for its annual meeting. The report of the president, Mr A. McCorkindale, was adopted as under:— “Members of the executive have met quarterly, tho meetings being well attended and keen interest displayed in the activities of the association. Early in the year the secretary, Mr Hall, was transferred to Hamilton, his place being taken by the present headmaster ; Mr W. C. Wilson. The main source of revenue has been social gatherings of which tho major portion of tho work was undertaken by the ladies’ committee to whom the success of the functions is entirely due. Two bridge parties and a fancy dress ball resulted m a net profit of £26 which amount was augmented by £9, the proceeds of a stall held on Parents’ Day. The fact that the Government is now unable to pay any subsidies on money raised for ground improvements will render it likely that there will be no help forthcoming from this source for some years. Parents are therefore strongly urged to get behind the association and support it with financial help in order that the school may not suffer from the withdrawal of the subsidies. The I thanks of tho association are duo to all parents who so generously contributed to the success of the undertakings; to the ladies who so kindly lent their homes for tho bridge parties; and to I the Press for valuable publicity. The association also wishes to record its ap- 1 preciation of the co-operation of the members of the school committee and. the teaching staff.” The meeting passed a resolution of, appreciation of the services of Mr and Mrs McCorkindale, whose work for the school over a period of several years has been most valuable. , The following officers were elected : President, Mr K. M. Little; secretary, Mr W. C. Wilson. Those parents present at the meeting, some 25, were con. stituted the committee. Arrangements are to be made to hold the usual children’s fancy dress ball at an early date. The association will also conduct the Parents’ Day on a bigger scale this year. TAONUI SCHOOL.

Mr R. A. McFarland presided at the annual meeting of householders at the Taonui School last night. The following were elected to tho committee: —Messrs R. A. McFarland (chairman and secretary-treasurer), A. Waugh, H. Waugh, E. Clevely, 11. Jefferies.
