TAX EVADED.
WEALTHY MAN IMPRISONED. Received April 8, 1.15 p.m. LONDON, April 7. John Priest, aged 60, a former rate collector at Wandsworth, sank on his knees and groaned when he was sentenced to three years’ penal servitude for evading the payment of income and super tax to the extent of £15,000 during the last seventeen years. Priest’s salary was £4OO a year. His father left lum a number of properties, to which he continually added out of his savings. He had £38,000 in the bank when proceedings were commenced. He lived in a house which cost £SO a year, though he admitted that his income rose in the past ten years from £6600 to £13,300. The full arrears have been paid since the summonses were issued.
