OTAKI, April 5. At a meeting of the unemployed it was decided to hold guessing compctitio'ns, the funds to go towards purchasing sheep, the meat to bo distributed among those out of work.

At tho annual general meeting of tho Hautere Miniature Rifle Club the election of officers resulted as follows: —President, Mr A. Thomson; secretary, Mr E. Ball; committee, Messrs W. Beauchamp, L. Lumsden, C. Morgan, J. Fielding and H. Eagle. A collection of gifts in aid of the commissariat of the Children’s Health Camp at Otaki was made at the Levin District High School in response to tho appeal transmitted by tho headmaster (Mr R. Foss), and as the result largo quantities of vegetables and fruit (including two cases of cooking apples) came forward, also several dozen jars of jam, and a good quantity of eggs, etc. By tho death of Mr Arekatera Te Ra (Carter), which occurred at his residence. Tainui, Otaki, recently, tho Maori race has lost one of its most influential and leading members. Tho deceased, who was the head of tho Ngati-Kapu tribe, was born in tho Otaki district 70 years ago, and had lived practically all his life in this locality. He was a keen sportsman and had been a member of the Otaki Maori Racing Club since its inception, and at the time of his death lie was vicepresident. The deceased also was cotrustee with Archbishop Redwood of the local church property —a gift made to the church by deceased’s mother. He leaves a widow and a grown-up family of three sons, Messrs J. Pirinoa, Featherston, and Kero and Tuhi, Foxton, and four daughters, Mosdames Baker and Elers, Foxton, Taratoa, Tauranga, and K. Hakaraia, Otaki, and several grandchildren. The funeral, which was a vory largo one, was conducted by Rev. McSherrv, assisted by Rov. Fathers Tymons and Melu.
