EMPIRE PORK.

MANAWATU’S PART. An interesting comment on Empire pork and the part New Zealand and the Manawatu are playing in building up the industry is contained in a recent issue of the English journal, the Co-operative Nows, an extract from which has been forwarded by the New Zealand Government publicity officer in London, Mr H. T. B. Drew. “One branch of rural activity in New Zealand which has only recently been seriously taken in hand by farmers in that Dominion is" the production of pork and bacon pigs on a large scale,” says the News. “There is indication that avenues for increased trade in these products are being exploited, and there seems to be a likelihood that steadily increasing numbers of pigs will bo available for export to England. “For some years past small shipments of frozen pork have been sent to England and have been favourably compared with similar commodities imported by England from other countries. New Zealand farmers working in conjunction with a number of curers, have adopted a system of voluntary grading under supervision of State officers which will ensure better_.quality and uniformity in ail pigs slaughtered. “By way ol assisting this movement the Manawatu and West Coast A. and P. Association, one of the largest agricultural organisations in New Zealand, has, during the past four years, made a feature at its Summer Show of a series of competitive classes which aim at providing a practical demonstration of the type of pig required for the English luarket, and in instructing farmers in*the way it should be reared and fattened. “During the present winter an additional class for porkers suitable for export was introduced in tho winter show, and some very fine specimens were on exhibition. At the summer show it is expected to have a very large entry in both the bacon and pork show classes. Tire porkers will be slaughtered and sent to Smithfield to be judged in the carcase in the same way as is now done with special lamb classes.”
