PARKING PATROLS.
FUNCTIONS CLEARLY DEFINED. DISTINCTIVE GAP APPROVED. The Manawatu Automobile Association ’advised the Palmerston North City Council last evening that Mr N. H. Mackie had interviewed the Mayor, who had approved of the suggestion to forward to the council the information that the North Island Motor Union had officially adopted a cap hearing the badge of the respective automobile associations as the badge of office of parking controls. The association reiterated that there should be no confusion between the dark blue cap worn by the traffic inspector and the black cap with white top bearing the association’s badge on the front worn by the parking patrols. The fact was stressed that the instructions given to the controls were very definite and included :—(1) On no occasion and under no circumstances were they to arrogate _ to themselves individually or collectively the function or duty of a traffic inspector; (2) they were to confine their activities to their respective stands; (3) that should any act of discourtesy or misconduct be proved the services of the guilty patrol would immediately cease; (4) that no request for any contribution for service should be made by the patrol. “It will be readily conceded that these patrols are rendering a useful, necessary and valuable service, and only last week an arrest was made, thanks to one of these men,” concluded the association’s letter.
Considering that the cap was now being adopted by the North Island Motor Union, the Mayor expressed the opinion that there should be no objection, as the public would recognise the cap, and , identify a patrolman as distinct from a traffic officer. The request was granted on the motion or Cr. Fitzherbert, seconded by Cr. McLeod. Both said the automobile association was doing good work.
