The garden party held in aid of the All Saints’ Children’s Home yesterday was, despite the unsatisfactory nature of the weather, most successful. Streamers brightened the grounds, and the stalls, well-laden, presented an attractive appearance. Before introducing the Mayor, Mr A. E. Mansford, who opened the function. Rev. Canon G. Y. Woodward referred to the fact that in the Wellington Diocese there were five homes with 260 children to be maintained. Palmerston North alone assisted towards the upkeep of the two homes in this district and the speaker expressed his deep appreciation of the response of the citizens to appeals for help. He also paid a tribute to the good work being carried out by the Home Committee and the matron.
Mr Mansford spoke of the problem confronting the committee in finding revenue to carry on the good work in such difficult times, but lie had been struck by the optimistic outlook of the committee ladies and hoped others would catch the same spirit. In declaring the garden party open he wished the committee success. When the weather permitted, the children provided very pleasant entertainment in umypolo dancing. The girls wore wreaths of pink rosebuds round their heads and pink posies on their white frocks, the boys also wearing pink posies. Assisted by Mesdames Attwood, Palmer, Watson and Bain and carefully instructed by Miss Gwenth Macnaughtan, they went through the various movements splendidly. An interesting little concert was also presented, the programme being; Songs, Mr F. G. Taplin, Mrs Bigham; elocutionary items, Miss Trask; play, “The Old Lady Shows Her Muddles,” in which the parts were admirablv enacted by Rev. P. and Mrs Wiltshire, .Miss Bovis and Mr Taplin. Accompaniments were played by Mrs McNielly and Mrs Bigham, while Larkins’ Band, whose services were given gratuitously, furnished light music.
