WOODVILLE RACES

ESTEEM WINS BIG HANDICAP SOUCHONG BEATS'SPRINTERS Dull weather, with a threat of rain on occasion, prevailed for the opening day of the Woodville autumn meeting and the attendance of the public was somewhat restricted, the totalisator handUng ,£4989 for the day as compared wth £8432 for the opening day last year. _ . _ In an unusual race wherein the leadership underwent quick changes, Esteem secured the final run to narrowly annex the honours in the Woodville Handicap from Jayson, with King Colossus third, the finish being an excellent one. The consist- • ent Souchong, who had won on both days at Palnjitua, again proved capable of leading home the open class sprinters quite comfortably, with Royal Songster and Great Charter filling the minor places. “

GRAN CHACO WINS AT LAST. MAIDEN STAKES RACE. Gran Chaco, who had the services of H. Gray, was installed favourite for the Maiden Stakes and he won, but only by the narrowest of margins from his fellow Awapuni-trained candidate, Riotous, who was making his first appearance in public. Foulwind end Longford showed the way to Gran Chaco and Master Arausio along the back, but crossing the top the last-named gave way to Riotous. Foulwind was still in the van as they straightened out, but Gran Chaco and Riotous moved up and the favourite held off the late challonger to win by a neck, with Foulwind a length and a half back. Midnight Echo was fourth, with Agrestic next. The Mirror, who was well supported, was left at the post and took no part in the race. FULL MARK WINS. The two Foxton candidates, Tigerism and Arrowhead, came in for strong support for the Oringi Highweight, but Full Mark proved himself to be superior class and the topweight won. comfortably from tho more favoured pair. Rash went out to make the pace from Fallow and Full Mark and he opened up a big gap. going along the back. However, Full Mark ran up to the leader approaching the entrance and was tho first to land into the straight, and he was untroubled thereafter to win by a length and a half from Tigerism, who had a similar margin over Arrowhead. Rash faded out in the straight, being last to finish. AN EXCITING FINISH. Mahora wound up a firm favourite for the Woodville Handicap from. , Esteem and King Colossus, but it was the second elect who proved to be the winner. It was an unsual race for the leadership changed in quick order over the last five furlongs, Esteem being the final member to take charge, and he stayed there to the close, although Jayson nearly caught him on the post. Patearoa, King Colossus and Briar Root was the order .going away from home, Esteem being on the rails at the rear. Mahora ran to the front going along the back, but Patearoa declined to give way, although within the next furlong Arajean secured the lead. Crossing the top the positions again underwent changes, Esteem going to the front, while King Colossus dropped to the rear. However, with heads straightened out for home King Colossus came up on the outside and he promised to be second until Jayson came from the ruck very fast to get to within a head of Esteem before the post was reached. King Colossus was a neck back, with Mahora another head further away. Briar Root was next. WASTELAND SURPRISES. Copper King was backed as unbeatable for the Sapling Stakes, but the best he could do was to finish fifth after being well enough placed throughout. Mister Quex, who had drawn No. 1 position at the. barrier, was smartest to begin, but Wasteland quickly ran past to lead Mister Quex, Copper King, Lady Alert and Meritor across the top. There was praotically no change in the order coming into the straight _ although Might had improved hie position, but the, leader was travelling very comfortably. Mister Quex made a bid to get up, but Wasteland was never in danger, winning by two lengths. Might and Late Jest finished fairly well to attend one another home with Copper King and Senegal next. SOUCHONG SCORES AGAIN. On the strength of her performances at Trentham, Leisure was made favourite for the Ruahine Handicap, but the Lord Quex mare was beaten out of the money, the pace eet by Souchong having the field struggling early. The six runners were sent away in line, but before the turn Souchong and Aston had worked free from Leisure, Great Charter and Juggle, Royal Songster drifting to the rear. Souchong turned for home clear of Aston, with Great Charter on the latter’s quarters, and in the run to the judge’s box Souchong maintained his position to win bv two lengths from Royal Songster, who got through on the rails to beat Great Charter by a similar distance. Juggle was close up fourth with Leisure ahead of Aston. A CLOSE CALL. Backers were content to accept an extremely short price about Araunah, but they had some anxious moments before being assured that the favourite had won. Haulbowline began smartly from False Scent, Grand Lahu and Lyrical, but the leader allowed False Scent to assume charge crossing the top with Grand Lahu, Haulbowline .and Lyrical all ahead of Araunah. With heads straightened out for home Araunah commenced his run on the outside, Grand Lahu coming out to meet him and the pair finished locked together wide out, the verdict of a nose favouring Araunah over Grand Lahu. There was a gap of three lengths to Sabatini, who finished well after getting away indifferently. SANGUINE KING’S TURN. . Monarchy was a firm favourite from Saltpot for the Kumeroa Hack Handicap, but the dividend-payers were Sanguine King and St. Roger. Sanguine King and Monarchy jumped away smartly from Alpinist, Eminent and St. Roger. However, as they turned to go across the top St. Roger took charge to show the way to Eminent, Sanguine King, Monarchy, Alpinist and Flower, and the leader was still well clear at the distance. Sanguine King was meantime being hard ridden, and the Feilding representative got up just short of the post to beat St. Roger by half a neck with Monarchy third three lengths back. Flower was fourth, with Saltpot next. MOA BIRD WINS NICELY. Moa Bird, favourite for the President’s Handicap, wound up the day’s activities by being the third favourite to live up to the expectations' of backers. Royal Lineage, who was making a reappearance after a long absence, showed his old brilliance early in his races by being in front within a couple of furlongs, and he led Moa Bird, Rory Mor, Royal Game and Statuary aoross the top. However, with the straight reached Moa immediately ran to the front, Royal Game and Statuary both running forward, while Rory Mor made a late effort. Moa Bird, however, had an advantage of a length and a half at the po3t from Statuary, with Royal Lineage half a length back and a head in front of Rory Mor. THE DETAILED RUNNERS.
