Although subjected to severe strain it is thought that tlxo flood in the Oroua River on Sunday (lid not cause any damage to the Feilding Borough Council’s weir and intake system which is situated several miles up the river at Kiwitea. Mr T. K. Hay, borough engineer, stated this morning that it vriu not be possible to ascertain whether any damage has been done to the gabions on the downstream side of the weir until the river falls, and this is not expected to happen for a day or two. In the meantime, however a more serious position has arisen, Mr Hay said, in that the intake chamber has been completely blocked with flood debris and, although the water in the river is at the top level of the.chamber, the pi))fi lino loading to the reservoir is dry. This morning a gang of men under Mr Pearson left for the intake to endeavour to clear away the debris, but in the meantime, and from the blocking of the intake, the town has been drawing on the supply of water in \he two reservoirs. These contain sufficient for two days’ supply with a normal draw-off and it was important therefore, Mr Hay remarked, that the intake chamber be cleared without delay. As a result of tire lowering of the'level in the reservoirs the pressure of water at the gauge in Mr Hay's office stood at 6olbs this morning, a low pressure having regard to the fact that at present no water except for household purposes is .being used, the rain having satisfactorily carried out the work that the hoses were used for. Tire Oroua River rose again yesterday afternoon, a further heavy fall of rain being experienced in the upper reaches of the river. MAGISTRATE’S COURT. Mr R. M. Watson, S.M., presided at to-day’s sitting of the Feilding Magistrate’s Court. TRAFFIC BREACHES. Arising out of a collision which occurred at the intersection of the Palmerston North-Sanson highway and the Awahuri Road at Awahuri on November 2 last, Alfred Neale, service car driver, ofg Wanganui, pleaded guilty to a charge of failing to give wav to traffic approaching from the right. Defendant 3aid ne had approached the corner slowly and" was keeping a look-out for traffic, but did not see the other car until he was more than half-way across the intersection. At this point the car which came up Awahuri Road hit defendant’s car on the fear wheel, overturning it. The Magistrate held that defendant should have seen the other car earlier, and inflicted a fine of £1 with 10s costs. Alfred Henry Martin pleaded guilty to a charge of driving an overloaded motor lorry and was fined £3 and costs 12s. In fixing the penalty, the Mgaistrate said he would take into consideration the statement of the solicitor for defendant that the lorry was a new one and was undergoing a test for carrying a certain load when the offence was committed.
