IRISH FREE STATE

ELECTION RESULTS. SUPPORT FOR MR DE VALERA. LABOUR ANNOUNCEMENT. (United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) LONDON, Feb. 22. In Dublin the Labour Party announces that it will put Mr W. T. Cosgrave out, and'Mr Eamon de Valera in a position of dependence. It will impose strict limitations to the Republican programme, particularly with regard to tinkering with the Treaty, though this is unlikely to prove an obstacle to an alliance between Labour and the Republicans, as Mr Valera has already announced that he will again consult the electorate before denouncing the Treaty. On the present prospects Mr de. Valera will have a voting majority m the new Assembly of at least seven, nut he may have only three; indeed, the final result may depend on the polling in, Leitrim. . , . Asked regarding the Irish representation at the Ottawa Conference, Mr de Valera said: ‘,‘Our trade with tue Dominions is so small that the negotiations can be. carried on nearer home than at Ottawa.” ’ The Sunday Times says: “We need not be apprehensive, though we should not ignore the dangers. If the oath of allegiance is abolished, the wisest course probably will be to let the effect operate automatically. Th<j,_ Free State would cease to he a Dominion, an (i Southern Irishmen living in England would become aliens, and tariff preferences would bo forfeited.”
