GOLD STANDARD

SOUTH AFRICAN ATTITUDE. SELECT COMMITTEE APPOINTED. PREMIER ATTACKS GENERAL ■ • SMUTS. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) Received February 23, 10.0 a.m. CAPETOWN, Feb. 22. The twelve days’ debate on the Premier’s motion to appoint a Select Committee on the gold standard concluded with the adoption of the motion by 77 votes to 60. The Premier confined his reply to a bitter attack on General Smuts, whom he accused of deliberately inciting the people to violence and stampeding the farmers. General Smuts has issued a reply to the Premier, in which he characterises the Government’s obstinacy as criminal, irresponsible and trifling. The Opposition washes its hands of the Select Committee.
