RACING NEWS.
THE WOODVILLE MEETING. FIELDS "REVIEWED. (By “Binocular.”) Although tho fields for tho autumn meeting of the Woodville Jockey Club did not fill as well as had been anticipated, they are of sufficient numerical strength to ensure good and interesting racing. The club’s property is reported in be in first class order after the recent rain and owners on this circuit will have the opportunity of racing their representatives under the best of conditions, which will bo in tho nature of a change after tho hard trncks of the past few months, llio programme —an eight-raco one —to be presented to-morrow will be as under: 11.45 a.m. MAIDEN STAKES, of 60 sovs. Six fur--1 -
There is not a great deal of form to commend the majority of the maiden candidates, although Foulwind, Gran Chaco and Master Arausio have been placed on occasion. Longford and The Mirror are likely improvers, but the trio in strongest demand will be: Mastor Arausio, Longford, Gran Chaco. 12.30 p.m, ORINGI HIGH-WEIGHT HANDICAP, of 70 fiovs. One mile and a distance.
j. igcnsiii a o-u v ~ w Full Mark and Arrowhead have been both competing in cup company. of late, but without any material success. They will, however, find the opposition less formidable to-morrow. Tigerism has been facing well in hack company, while a' slight improvement would bring Follow into the reckoning. The distance may be too far for Baskier in a true run race, while Hash will bo having his first race for some time, although ho is in good order. The favourate may consequently come from : Arrowhead, Full Mark, Tigerism. 1.15 p.m. .WOODVILLE HANDICAP, of 125 sovs. One mile and a quarter.
Eight horses ar© carded in the principal handicap and, with the sting nut of the ground it should be to the liking of Mahora. King Colossus disappointed at Wanganui, although he should bo better for the racing. At that fixture Grant Jury won on tho second day and a 3 lbs penalty does not place him out of consideration There are plenty of possibilities in tho 'lower portion of the handicaps anti Esteem, Arajean and Jayson can bo expected to show up. Tho event hears quite an open appearance, but the public may select as their fancies: Mahora, Grand Jury, Anjem 2 p.m. SAPLING STAKES, of 70 sovs. Five furlongs.
Twelve youngsters figure in the Sapling Stakes u.nd those with the best qualifications appear to be Mister Quex, Copper King, Lute Jest and Marais on account o£ their greater racing experience. While a surprise may eventuate, tho favourite ehould come from: Copper King, Late Jest, Mister Quex. 2.45 p.m. RUAHINE HANDICAP, of 100 sovs. Six furlongs.
Unfortunately, only six open sprinters survived acceptance night, and Aston is giving away a great deal of weight to the other runnels. Great Charter appears to be nicely weighted and the betting might find the following in demand: Great Charter, Souchong, Leisure. 3.30 p.m. COUNTY HACK HANDICAP, of 70
JLIIU iJUUjjub I j-yj »» As a rosult of his win over a scurry distance at Wanganui, Haulbowline has been advanced 61bs and the poundage and the distance may find him out. Ara-unah, on the strength of his Trentham showing, will no doubt.be the favourite. The Budget represents winning form, while Sabatini and False Scent may play a part in the finish. Final adjustments on the totalizator may find those in favour to bo: Araunah, The Budget, Haulbowline. 4i15 p.m. KUAIIiROA HACK HANDICAP, of 75
A good Cold is carded in the hack »oven furlongs event and the betting should take a wide range in consequence. St. Roger ran a good second to Trek at Trenthani, whereas Saltpot failed at the samo fixture, although ho has probably improved in the interim. Flower was a winner on tho West Coast, while Captain l)an scored over the distance at Hawera. Sanguine King, Anemometer, Alpinist.and Sir Spear have all figured in placings sinco the new year, so there is plenty of scope for betters. However, those securing strongest support may prove to be : St. Roger, Flower, Saltpot. 6 p.m. PRESIDENT’S HANDICAP, of 90 sovs.
The day’s proceedings will conclude •with an open seven furlongs event, but again a six horse race is promised. Strongest support may be forthcoming for: Moa Bird, Rory Mor, Statuary. CHIEF MARIONETTE IMPROVING;. In a gallop between Chief Marionetto (Bradley), La Modems (Thomas) and Inflation "(Chisholm) at the Awapuni the other morning, the, first-named a slight advantage at the' jum'p-awdy. However, crossing the top La Moderno deposed tho other*'filly only for Chief Marionette to come again to lead Gay Ballerina’s sister home, with Inflation a length or so away. The gallop; was'carried out on the. course proper—the flags being well out—and they returned the smart time of 51 4-ssec.- for t-he half-mile. After breakfast The Mirror (Milham) Tan . three furlongs'on tho in 39 2-5 after requiring 14 3-5 to. negotiate, the initial furlong. This gelding is improving, but the best may not bo seen of him till next se'asori’. ' Saltpot (Musgrove), who -is looking -a picture, strode over six furlongs in 1.24 1.5, while his stable companion, Rash, was. given an easy task. The hardness of the tracks haa prevented the latter - from Doing schooled, but he will be given a run in the high weight event at Woodville. - < Chief Clerk was jumped 'by A. W.-Mc-Donald during the week* and the Chief Ruler gelding made a, promising showing. Neither he nor Chief Cook will, however, compete at Woodville..' . . Since his return from Taranaki Blacksmith has been treated to it spell ana ho will probably make his next appearand at Napier Park, unless the overtures mode by a southern owner for the Arrowsmith gelding lead-.to business'in'tho meantime. vAs a result of tho horßo striking himself, Mrs McDonald has meantime lost the services of Llyn Du. It will be unfortunato" if a »pell is found necessary. ~ ■ It is the intention of Mrs McDonald to
take a team to tlio Napier Park meeting' and Chief Cook, Chief Clerk, Blacksmith, In Vain, Henry of Navarre, Chief Marionette and Ythan will probably compose the string. , . , T , - Lucky Mart (Milham), who is by Latham—Cupid’s Mark, the dam being a halfsister to Glen Rossio, was given a gallop over a couple of furlongs. It was her first test and, by running 26 2-ssoc., she evidenced that she possesses tho family pace. Tho five-year-old Paper Money mare, Equitant, has been taken over by R-.E. Hatch. While somewhat on tho small side, this mare has always displayed a good turn of speed and her new mentor might prove capable of improving her manners. WAIKATO MEETING. CUP TO CHIEF JOY. Per Press Association. HAMILTON, Feb. 22. Tho Waikato Racing Club’s summer meeting opened in fine windy weather to-day. Tho course was in good order.
