MAGISTRATE’S COURT.

MISCELLANEOUS CASES. Mr J. L. Stout, S.M., presided over the sitting of the Magistrate’s Court at Palmerston North to-day. A plea of guilty was entered by Mr Ongley on behalf of A. A. Thompson, licensee of the Empire Hotel, to a charge of selling liquor on the premises after hours on January 16. SeniorSergeant Whitehouse said he had found two men in the telephone cabinet, and the licensee had frankly admitted supplying them with liquor. Counsel stated that it was another case of a man asking to use the telephone and then requesting a drink tor himself and a friend. The licensee had at first refused and then supplied thsm to get rid of them. The Magistrate imposed a penalty of £5 with 10s costs.

A fine of £l, with 3s costs, was inflicted upon H. Stone for exceeding the speed limit at the intersection of Main and Ruahine Streets. C. Robert was fined 10s, with 3s costs, for cycling on the footpath. G. Greer, of Linton, pleaded guilty through Mr Ongley to a charge of failure to give way to traffic approaching from the right at the intersection of Fitzherbert Avenue and College Street. A penalty of £2, with 18s costs, was imposed. Albert Edward Bonner was charged with the theft'on February 20 at Palmerston North of a fountain pen valued at 255, the property of George Richardson. Accused was remanded until Februarv 26. REMAND GRANTED. John Bernard McMahon, a plumber, aged 44, appeared on a charge of indecent assault. . Application was made o by SeniorSergeant Whitehouse for the remand of accused until Friday, and Mr Ongley, who appeared for accused, asked that he be admitted to bail. Senior-Sergeant Whitehouse said he opposed bail as accused had already given an indication that he was not likely to appear if it was granted. Counsel stated that the Supreme Court did not sit before May and it hail was refused accused would have to remain in custody for three months. Bail could be fixed at a substantial amount. , ... , The remand was granted, bail being fixed in accused’s own recognisance of £3OO and two sureties, each of £l5O, a total of £6OO.
