BAND CONTEST

CHAMPIONSHIPS AT WELLINGTON Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Feb.. 21. Despite frequent showers of ram and a slippery, sodden ground, the festival of the New Zealand champion. band contest was opened with the quickstep competition at Athletic Park on Saturday afternoon. Four thousand attended. The competition was divided into two • sections, with ten bands in the B grade and five in the A. St. Kilda Municipal won the A grade, with Port Nicholson Silver second, while the B grade was won by Nelson Garrison, with Hastings Citizens’ second and Onmaru Municipal third. The B grade contest was held first. The three placed bands were outstanding, Carterton Municipal being the best of the others. There was splendid marching. In the A grade contest all the bands marched well, although Woolston was rather disappointing. St. Kilda’s performance was a very fine effort. The bands were, better trained than in previous contests, with more care over details. Results are as follow: MILITARY DISPLAY AND QUICKSTEP TEST MARCH. A GRADE. Woolston, 71, 1673, 2382, 5B GRADE. Nelson Garrison, 64, 169, 233, 1. Hastings Citizens’, 62, 170}, 232}, 2. Oamaru Municipal, 68, 1633, 2313, 3. Carterton Municipal, 66, 1603, 226}, 4. Mastcrton Municipal, 63, 1573, 2203, 5. Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, 67, 144}, 211}, 6. Miramar Silver, 60, 151, 211, 7. Stratford Municipal, 61, 148}, 209}, 8. Dunedin City Tramways, 65, 139, 204, 9. Christchurch Municipal, 64, 138}, 202}, 10. MCLEOD CUP CONTEST. At the Town Hall in the evening 14 bands competed in the hymn contest for the McLeod Cup. Woolston won with an excellent performance. Another good.example of hymn playing was given by St. Kilda. Two good exlubi tions were made by tho B grade bands, Hastings Citizens’ and Mirimar.
