BULLS
(From Our Own Correspondent). BULLS, Feb. 19. The committee of the Rangitikei Racing Club met in Bulls on Wednesday. Present : Messrs J. H. Perrett (chairman.) J. E. Walker, K., MoK. Duncan Rex. MoKolvie, F. 0. Bailey, D. W. Wilson, E. A. Caldow, A. W. Amon, J. Tricker. J. B. Johnstone, J. McKelvie, G. H. Archer and R. Mackay. Leave of absence was granted to Mr J. H. Whisker. _ The following resolution was carried unanimously : “That this committee places on record its high appreciation of the eminent services rendered to the Rangitikei Racing Club by the late Mr F. J. Mansell, extending over a period of 44 years. Fie served the club m the capacity of committeeman, treasurer and vice-president, always worked hard in its interests, and his place will be hard to fill. We deeply regret his passing.’’ The Racing Conference and the Wanganui District Committee wrote approving of the club’s programme. Mr T. Torrey was appointed clerk of the course. The following stewards were appointed: Starter’s and ambulance, Messrs F. 0. Bailey and K. McK. Duncah; birdcage, Messrs D. W. Wilson and Rex MoKelvie; totalisator. Mr R. Mackay- jockeys’ room, Messrs E. A. Caldow and A. W. Amon; booths, Mr J. E. Walker. The course committee reported that the course was in good order; all buildings had been cleaned, and the garden was looking well. Handicaps for the Newman Tennis Cup competition have been declared as follows: —Saturday group : H. R; Wilson and Miss S. Walker 4, G. W. Sneddon and Miss M. Goodall 8, L. Hillier and Mis 3 Minnie Kearney 9, H. Hendry and Miss M. Tricker 11, R. Mackay and, Mrs Mansell 19, N. Amon and Mrs Armstrong 15, C. Powles and Miss M. Green 16, A. W. Amon and Miss M. Brookie 17, E M. Broughton and Mrs Farrer 17. Wednesday group: M. R. Mansell and Miss E. Larmer scr., F. E. Ralfo and Miss G, Guy 5, G. Drew and Miss E. Simpkin 16, D. Willis and Mrs G. Henderson 13, M. C. Gould and Mrs Hendry 13, C. W. Farrer and Mrs Dean 16, W T Dean and Miss Z. Ralfo 17, G. D. Flower and Miss May Kearney 22. “Men’3 Night” at the Women’s Institute firoved a great success, there being a arge attendance of members and their menfolk at the gathering held in the Town Hall on Thursday evening. Mrs Marumaru gave a demonstration of Maori arts and crafts, which was most interesting, and a pleasant evening was passed in games and musical items. Mrs Crosland rendered songs, which were warmly applauded, and the competitions were won os follow: Biscuit competition, Miss Simpkin; tree competition, Mr H. F. Russell; “Passing the Spoon” competition. Mrs D. Brookie. Supper was provided by the hostesses of the evening. Owing to tho continued dry weather and consequent shortage of feed the cows are drying off earlier than usual this year. Flounders in good numbers have been secured on both sides of the lower Rangitikei River during the past week. and fresh fish is welcome. The locally-trained horse, Hystnde, has been sold to a sportsman on the West Coast of the South Island, and will do his future racing there. While racing m Mr A. Neale’s colours Hystride scored three wins and several minor placings, including a second at Wanganui on Thursday. Chief Savage, another of Neale’s charges, was to have raced at Wanganui this week, but had to be scratched omng to a leg filling on the eve of the meeting.
