WOODVILLE.
WOODVILLE, Feb. 17. Mr H. P. Horne, of Woodville, was sworn in as a Justice of the Peace by Mr J. Miliar, S.M., this morning. Mr and Mrs W. H. Nelson and Mr and Mrs H. P. Horne (Woodville) visited Mr and Mre William Nelson at Waikoko on Monday. Mre S. McKinlay leaves to-morrow for a 6hort. holiday at Foxton. Mrs Howard, Mr A. _P. Howard and Miss Howard, who are visiting Hawke’s Bay, are staying with Mr and Mrs J. D. Inglis, “Ratahiwi.’’ •/A shining ouokoo, which is an exceedingly rare bird in these parts, was observed in McLean Street a day or two ago. The bird was identified by its shining coat and the stripes of white across its breast From whence it came is something of a mystery, but it must have travelled some distanoe. '
A happy party was held in tho Forester*’ Hall, on Monday, when the Girl Guides and Ranger# entertained Mias Ruth Dodd at a kitchen evening. Miss Dodd’e marriage takes place shortly, and she was the recipient of many very useful gifts. Miss K. Johnson rendered two vocal solos, a pianoforte solo was given by Miss Armstrong, a banjo solo by Mr Turner and pianoforte duets by Mrs Jones and Mr R. Jones. After, a dainty supper had been handed round, dancing was indulged in until the early hours of the morning, the music being supplied by Mr R. R. Johnston and Miss McDonald.
