BRITISH FINANCE

EXCHEQUER RECEIPTS. INCREASED RETURNS. TAXPAYERS’ EFFORTS. (United Press Association—By Electrlfl Telegraph.—Copyright.) (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, Feb. 16. The Exchequer receipts for the past week are again highly satisfactory. Last week’s revenue amounted to £33,700,000, and as the expenditure was £8,000,000 the surplus on the week totalled £25,700,000. This has reduced the deficit during the week from £100,000,000 to £74,300,000. The deficit last year at the present date was £98,000,000. The income-tax and surtax receipts continue to be satisfactory. The Revised Budget contemplated a total from these sources of £345,000,000, of which £265,300,000 had been received up to Saturday. Thus £79,700,009 must be collected before the financial year ends on March 31, whereas last year tho amount outstanding at this date was £115,000,000. Since January 1 the Exchequer has received £167,300,000, compared with £111,500,000 in the corresponding period or last year from these sources. The Customs revenue also is showing a weekly increase, and £13,000,000 more has been received than at the same date last year.
