“Counsel for the plaintiff has drawn a rather lurid picture for you,” observed His Honour Mr Justice Blair in his summing up in the Supreme Court at Blenheim, in an action for damages arising out of a motor accident. “He lias suggested to you that this man lay in the hospital for three months, and was racked by pain day after day, but it may not have been quite so bad as that, for we all know that some of these nurses do come along and soothe your fevered brow !” Concerning a rumour in Dunedin that should Sir Charles Statham still hold a majority over liis opponent, Mr Peter Neilson, after the final votes have been counted in the Dunedin Central electorate, an appeal, would be lodged on the ground that- an irregularity occurred in connection with a voting paper, the Otago Times says, little credence can be given to the rumour, as it seems probable that in the case of an irregularity such as that referred to the elector would be immediately supplied with a correct voting paper. It was alleged that at a city booth an elector was handed a voting paper on which Mr Neilson’s name had been crossed out, and when he protested the paper was initialled by the deputy returning officer.
