RACING NEWS.

THE WOODVILLE MEETING. COMMENTS ON THE CANDIDATES. By “Binocular.”) The summer meeting of the Woodviilo Jockey Club will open to-morrow and with the tracks having benefited by the rain the course should be in splendid order for racing. The club over the range possesses a magnificent proporty and a number of South Island horses will enter upon their racing in the north over the holiday period to-morrow. An eight-raco programme will be presented, and proceedings for the day will be entered upon with the Manga-atua Hurdles at 11.45 o’clock. Tunbridge, the topweight, will be making his first appearance for the season, while Royal Black, Clopton, Royal Songster, Arrowhead, The Sun and Kilmezzo are newcomers. Manuiri, Princess Elizabeth and Coon Song represent superior form, but several of the others are likely to improve and final selections may be made from : Manuiri, Coon Song, Princess Elizabeth. A baker’s dozen is carded for the Trial Plate, several of the promising candidates having dropped out on acceptance night. Beacon Eire will no doubt be favourite by reason of his efforts at RiccartOn, but Flakewhite, Capetown, King Thomond, Chief Clerk and Pukepapa will have friends. The man on top may influence backers, but meantime the favourite promises to come from. Beacon Fire, Flakewhite, Pukepapa. Two southern horses head the weights in the Bolton Handicap, and the fact that Desert Song will be bracketed with Gay Crest will influence patrons. However, there is always the possibility that Desert Song will contest the Borough Handicap instead. The form of Comprise improved considerably at the New Zealand Cup meeting to enable him to record two successive victories and the Kilboney gelding might prove capable of again beating Gay C>est. King Colossus should again run truo to form and the event might be a contest between :

Compris, Gay Crest, King Colossus. The success of Pillow Fight at Feilding has brought the Night Raid youngster into prominence for the Nursery Handicap, but there are others such as Tout-le-Mond, Mister Quex and Princess Bell who should fully extend to topweight. Marais and Chief Marionette are two novices of promise, but the favourite will no doubt come from : Pillow Fight, Tout-le-Mond, Princess Bell. With an advance of 61 bs the task set Aston of adding another victory to hi 3 credit has become increasingly difficult, but he cannot be totally overlooked. Korokio makes her initial appearance in open company as second topweight and to give away weight to several others indicates the handicapper’s opinion of the Redfern filly. Curie should find the straight to his liking, and, although Royal Routine has shown winning form of late the final selections may be made from: Korokio, Curie, Aston. Adelphi, Rotation and Hunting Boy have no recent form to commend them, but all three performers are good when at the top of their form. Arajean has given evidence of an improvement, while Gay Court, Lady Court and Beaconsfield will be entitled to respect. A wide range of betting might consequently result, for there is little definite form to servo as a guide, with those in demand being: Gay Court, Arajean, Lady Court. Saltpot and Fairway attended one another home in the Kowhai Hack Handicap at Feilding, the former narrowly failing to repeat his victory on the second day. Jayson has proved somewhat erratio for some time past, while Flower ran such a good race in the Oaks at Riccarton that she has only to repeat it to play a part to-morrow. Easterly, Rapallo and Blacksmith may attract support, but those in strongest demand will no doubt prove to be: Saltpot, Fairway, Flower.

Tho day’s proceedings will conclude with the Borough Handicap in which last year’s Wellington Cup winner, Stanchion, 13 required to concede a stone in weight to Desert Song. Stanchion has not figured previously this season, but Desert Song ran second to Silvermine in the Pearce Handicap on. the final day at Trentham, though on that occasion he had but 7.7 on his back. Chief Cook is getting up in /the weights, but with H. Gray on his. back he should not lack support. Moa Bird ran well at Feilding with 8.8 on his back, while King Midas was deemed worthy of a trip to the New Zealand Cup meeting only to fail. Royal Opera, Maui and Teller appear to be improving, but the public will no doubt express preference for: Moa Bird, Chief Cook, Desert Song. RIDING ENGAGEMENTS. The following riding engagements have been announced for the Woodville meeting where Palmerston North horsemen and horses are concerned : —R. C. Miles, Royal

Black; B. H. Morris, King Colossus; S. Anderson, Saltpot, Santoft; H. Gray, Chief Cook, Chief Clerk; K. Yoitre, Capetown, Princess Bell; H. Stockley, Chief Line, Blacksmith; R. Chisholm, Chief Marionette, Celeste; W. Broughton, Teller, Midnight Echo, Beaconsfield; R. Reed, Beacon Fire, Adventus, Hunting Boy, Pillow Fight. WAIPUKURAU NOMINATIONS.
