(From Our Own Correspondent.) ■SHANNON, Doc. 7. In judging the entries for tho Bledisloe essay prize Air J. H. Howell, late principal of the Wellington Technical College, placed Mrs W. H. McKenzie, Shannon Women’s Institute, first and as the first second and third prize essays ran so closely in merit the prize money was equally divided among tho respective writers. The subject of the ossay was “The. Best Aleans of Making Women’s Institutes of Real Benefit to the Rural Aroas of New Zealand,” and was for an annual prize of £5 5s offered by Lord and Lady Bledisloe. Alesdames A. Alason, Picard, Snelling, Brann, Blaikie and Bovis will represent Shannon against Manawatu at the Terrace End Croquet green on Thursday next. Alombors of the Girls’ Club are busily working up a social and dance to bo held shortly in aid of tho local unemployed funds. The president, Mra W. H. AlacKenzie, is not able to attend meetings, but is making satisfactory progress after her recent operation. Airs Bovis is in chargo of the club meetings in the meantime. A successful dance in aid of local unemployment funds was held at Mangaoro last Thursday evening, and a “sCo’’ evening is being run for the same fund this week. . Several Girl Guides in charge of their captain, Aliss E. Quarrie, spent a pleasant and instructive afternoon in the bush last Wednesday. The 2nd class Guides are all working hard at present on Ist class work and many hopo to have their badges by the end of the year. Aire D. Parcell, who has been spending some five weeks with relatives in tho south, returned homo on Saturday. Air A. Coates, of tho Public Work 3 Department staff, Alangaore, though able to get about, is still receiving hospital treatment for his hand. After an extended dry period welcome rain fell in Shannon on Sunday night.
