One of the worst winters experienced in the Waikato for many years, followed by an equally unfavourable spring, was fortunately largely counteracted by. extraordinarily heavy rains in November. The resultant heavy growth throughout the district has been ideal for ensilage and haymaking.

Thero was a marked contraction in the business done on Dominion stock exchanges last week, the general election in midweek being doubtless a disturbing factor.

Sales of Government securities showed a considerable drop. Tho 5£ per cent., 1937, stocks sold firm at £9B ss, £9B 10s, £9B 15s, and £99. and tho bonds* at £9B 10s and £9B 12s 6d. Tho 5j per cent, stocks, 1933, wore transferred at £9B 15s and £99, and tho 5£ per cent, stocks, 1936, at £9B 5s Id and £9B 10s. The 5i per cent .bonds, 1933, sold at £9B, and the 4£ per cent, bonds, 1938, at £96 17s 6d, an advance of 15s on the previous week.

A restricted businoss was done in bank shares, but prices were fairly well maintained. Bank of New Zealand changed hands at 47s 3d, 47s 6d, and towards tho week end at 48s, cum. dividend, Which was distributed on Saturday. National Bank of New Zealand sold at £4 Us, a drop of 3s on tho salo reported in the previous week. Tho fall was doubtless duo to tho lowering of tho interim dividend. Commercial Bank of Australia, ordinary, sold at 16s, 16s Id, and 16s 3d, as compared with up to 17s in the previous weok. Bank of Australasia sold at £9 3s, or 2s below tho Nosing prico of tho previous week. Union Banks wero also not auite as firm, selling at £8 Is and dropping to £7 16s. Bank of Now South Wales were in strong demand at firming prices. Dalgety and Co .changed hands at £B. £7 17s 9d, and £7 17s, as compared with £7 16s in the previous week. Goldsbrough, Mort and Co. eased off when it was announced that there would bo no interim dividend. In the previous week .hoy sold at 22s 5d to 23s 4d, and last weok they changed hands at 21s 9d to 225. New Zealand Loan and Mercantile ordinary stock sold at £SO. Insurance shares wore steady but business was restricted. New Zealand Insurance sold at 40s 6d and 40s. and South British Insurance at 54s 3d and 545.

Auckland Gas changed hands at 23s 7d, and Wellington Gas, ordinary, at 26s 9d, and preference at 15s 9d. Wellington Woollen ordinary sold at £4 6s. or 6d below the salo recorded the week before.

New Zealand Breweries sold steadily at 29s 3d, cum dividond of 4 per cent, for tho half-year endbd September 30, which is payable to-day. Staples and Co. changed hands at 28s, and Tooth and Co. sold at, 19s 6d. IPs fid. 19s 3d, and 20s 2d. British Tobacco wero inclined to bo dull and sold at 24s 6d. Colonial Sugar showed a steady upward trend with sales at £36, £36 ss, £36 7s 6d. £36 12s 6d, and £36 15s. SATURDAY’S QUOTATIONS. COWS ELECTROCUTED. ELEVEN ANIMALS PERISH

AUCKLAND, Dec. 6

Eleven dairy cows out of a herd of 40, the property of Mrs Chalmers, of Horahora, were found electrocuted on Friday morning as, a result of a hightension line breaking.

The cows were turned out on Thursday night, and everything appeared in order on Friday until the eleven carcases were found lying in a paddock.
