MARKING OF GOODS.
NEW SOUTH WALES ACT
VICTORIANS PERTURBED
Great uneasiness and resentment are felt in Victoria at the proclamation of the Factories and Shops (Amendment) Act of New South Wales, which requires goods to be marked. Victorian manufacturers and traders are perturbed been use of the propaganda in New South Wales that people there should buy only goods made m New South Wales. The Chamber of Manufactures in Melbourne has decided to take counsel’s opinion upon the Act and regulations in the hope that it may be found to contain some breach of the Federal Constitution. The council of the Melbourne Chamber of Commerce has appointed a special committee to deal with the matter. One point causing concern to merchants is the provision in the Act which makes it compulsory for the name of the manufacturer to be shown upon goods. This is a serious interference with the arrangements of many merchants. It is generally contended that the Act is contrary to the spirit of the Federal Constitution, if it does not infringe the letter of the law.
