TENNIS STAR’S DEBT
DECORATIONS TO HOUSE. The money troubles of Edmond Fearnley Whittingstall, whose wife was formerly Miss Eileen Bennett, the wellknown tennis player, were mentioned in a County Court in England recently. A firm of decorators sued Mrs Whittingstall’s mother for work done to Mr Whittingstall’s house last March. The amount claimed was £B3.
Plaintiff’s counsel suggested that a disagreement developing between the Whittingstalls probably influenced Mrs Bennett to change her mind and refuse to pay for work she had ordered. Defendant, in evidence, said his mother-in-law gave the decorators orders to proceed with the work while he was practically penniless. This Mrs Bennett denied. Asked by counsel how much money her daughter had, Mrs Bennett said she gave her a few pounds occasionally. Counsel: Was it with these few pounds she travelled the world playing tennis P Mrs Bennett refused to answer.
In answer to further questions, Mrs Bennett said there were a lot of family matters she did not wish to mention in Court.
Mrs Whittingstall said her mother had acted on her behalf in ordering the work to be done. She received £3 a week housekeeping allowance. Judgment was reserved.
