CANADA’S POPULATION.

The anticipation of the preliminary returns that the 1931 census would place Canada’s population at over the ten million mark has been realised. The official figure is 10,353,778, an increase of 1,565,829 in the past ten years. The first decennial census was held in 1871 when the total population was 3,689,257. The rate of increase may be summed up in this way: In the thirty years up to the beginning of this century the population only grew by 1,682,058 to little more than 5,371,000, while in the three decades of this century, the increase has been much more rapid, with the result that the numbers have almost doubled since the 1901 census. The development of the West by immigrants, and the increased production that has made possible the industrial development in the Eastern Provinces, the most striking feature in the economic history of Canada in this century, have'Contributed to swell the population figures. Thus, in 1911, the 7,200,000 mark had been passed, while ten years later, when the next census was taken, the total inhabitants were 8,788,000. Canada is now the equal in population of the Argentine, but, she exceeds in this respect Belgium, Greece, Hungary, Netherlands and Sweden. Of her chief cities Toronto shows an increase of more than 20 per cent, in the decade, and now has 627,582 people; Winnipeg has grown from 179,987-. to 217,587 and Vancouver’s population has increased by over 50 per cent, to 245,300.
