STREAM-LINED BULLETS.
TERRIFIC VELOCITY CLAIMED.
A sporting cartridge, with streamlined bullets and the terrific muzzle velocity of nearly 4000 miles an hour—twice the initial velocity of the ordinary magnum high-velocity ammunition—lias been perfected by a German, Dr. Gerlich.
The invention follows lengthy experimenting with ultra-high velocities. The bullets are stream-lined, and provided with a “ghost” head, in which a light framework supports a tip of gilding. The metal envelope contains 100 grains of a special nitre-cellulose powder, with a velocity of 5800 ft. a second. It is estimated'that the bullet will travel 200yds in one-tenth of a second, in which time an animal aimed at, if moving at 20 miles an hour, would only hbve covered three feet, compared with a tisual velocity occupying a quarter of a second, in which a similar target would move over seven feet. The invention enables allowances for a moving target to be reduced to a minimum.
