On Saturday the local tennis team journeyed to Bulls to play the first match of the season in the Manawatu Lawn Tennis Association’s B grade competition. The match resulted in a win for the home team by 15 sets and 140 games to 1 set and 72 games. Detailed results are as follow, Rongotoa players mentioned first: Ladies’ singles.—M. Hunt lost to E. Walker, I—7;1 —7; M. Tunnicliffe beat Mrs Mansell, 7—5; G. Eades lost to —. Ralfe, 57; J. Lemon lost to —. Walker, 4 —7., Ladies’ doubles. —M. Hunt and M. Tunnil cliffo lost to E. Walker and Mrs Mansell, 6 ; G. Eades and J. Lemon lost to Mieses Ralfe and Walker. 2 —7. Men’s singles.—R. Gloyn lost to R. Mansell, 7 —9; L. J. Walker lost to O. H. Grut, 6—9; C. Tunnicliffe lost to H. J. Hendry, 3—9; E. Amott lost to G. Drew, 7 Men’s doubles. —R. Gloyn and L. J. Walker lost to Mansell and Grut, 4—9; E. Tunnicliffe and E, Amott lost to Hendry aqd Drew, 4 —9. Mixed doubles. —R. Gloyn and M. Hunt lost to R. Mansell and Miss Walker, 4—9; L. J. Walker and M. Tunnicliffe lost to 0. Ki. Grut and Mrs Mansell, 6 —9; G. Eades and E. Tunnicliffe lost to H. J. Hendry and Miss Ralfe, 2 —9; J. Lemon and E. Arnott lost to G. Drew and Miss Walker, 5—9. The following ladder games were played during the week: —Miss J. Lemon lost to G. Eadea, 5 —7; Miss M. Tunnicliffe lost to Mrs Walker, o—6; H. Walker beat A. Amott, 6—4. Mrs Morcom presided over_ an unusually large gathering when the Women’s Institute met this afternoon. There were over sixty members in attendance, four of whom were present for the first time. Formal business having been disposed of, a very interesting hour was spent in acquiring 'a knowledge of making bead necklets and organdie sachets, the demonstration being in the capable hands of Mrs C. Davison, and Misses Tunnicliffe and Trinkner. A competition on the best gift for a child followed, each member providing an article which will be sent to children’s homes as gifts for the Christmas tree. Mrs A. J. Will was the winner of the competition, Miss L. Gray second and Mrs Dafter third. The hostesses were Mrs Buchanan, Mrs Hughes and Misses Cleaver and L. Davis. A social evening is to bo held before Christmas and this will conclude the institute’s activities for the year. The rainfall record kept by Mr J. F. McKelvio, of Carnarvon, shows that during November rain fell on ten days making a total fall of 4.3 inches. On November 21 there was the unusual fall of 2.35 inches. In November, 1930, rain fell on 21 days for a total of 4.45 inches.
