LARGE SUM AWARDED.
LIBEL ON HORSE TRAINER. Received December 2, 11.55 a.m. LONDON, Dec. 1. The alleged doping of the racehorse Donpat over a year ago was the basis of an action by the trainer, Charles Chapman, against Lords Rosebery, Ellesmere and Harewood (stewards of the Jockey Club), Weatherby and Sons (publishers of the Racing Calendar), and the proprietors of The Times for libel in publishing the stewards’ decision warning off Chapman from Newmarket and disqualifying the horse. Defendants pleaded privilege and justification. Their counsel contended that they never said Chapman doped the horse. Evidence was given that plaintiff had offered £SOO reward and employed a private detective to discover who doped tlie horse but had failed.
The jury found that the words meant that Chapman was a party to the doping and returned a verdict granting £13.000 damages against the stewards and the Weatherbys, and a further £3OOO against all the defendants. A stay of execution was granted.
