FOXTON MOTOR SPORTS

(From Our Own Correspondent.) FOXTON, Oct. 27.

Ideal weather conditions prevailed for the Foxton United Sports Association’s annual motor cycle sports meeting held on the Foxton racecourse yesterday, and the fixture was a success from all points of view. The gate taking totalled £305 compared with £290 last year and constituted a record of the club. The track was in excellent condition after rain overnight and tome fast times were recorded. During the afternoon Mr J. Linklater, M.P.. presented tho various trophies that had been won and congratulated tho winners, saying it was pleasing to note that English machines had annexed most of tho events. Cheers were given for the successful competitors, the club and Mr Linklater. Details of the events are as follow: WHIROKINO HANDICAP (Novice), 5 laps.—G. Jopson (2jJ Harley) 20sec' 1; F. Lindsay (34 Rudge), ssec, 2; H. Stevenson (2$ Rex Acme), lOsec, 3. Time, 5.40. Sixteen starters. Won by 100 yards. Jepson, on tho limit had no difficulty in annexing the event, although Lindsay made a determined effort and finished a close second, replacing Stevenson in tho second lap. HIMATANGI CLASSIC, machines up to 350 c.c.; 7 laps.—Tui Morgan (2J Harley), Bcr, 1; H. Stevenson (23 Rex Acme), 25sec, 2; Tim Wilkinson (2J Harley), lOsec, 3. Time, 7.20 1-5. The nine starters got away and Whito led tho field until the fourth lap, followed by H. G. Stephenson end H. Stephenson. In tho fifth lap White dropped out with engine trouble and Tui Morgan, who had been steadily overtaking tho field, came up fast, and took up third running. After skidding at the corner near the stand Morgan m.ado a brilliant spurt along the back strait and lapped the sixth in 56 3-ssec to run into first place which he retained to win by 200 yards. FOXTON RACING CLUB HANDICAP, 6 laps. First Heat.—Reg Ranby (34 Douglas), 25 tec) 1; J. Gower (34 Scott), 35sec, 2; J. Manning (34 P. & M.), 40scc, 3. Time, 6.16 2-5. Ranby rodo well throughout. Manning took tho lead in tho second lap from Chrystall, but gave place to Ranby in the fourth. Ranby then retained his lead to the finish, although he was seriously challenged by Gower. Coulthard also looked dangerous; however ho crashed in tho fifth lap, but was unhurt. Ranby won by 300 yards with a length between second and third.

Second Heat. —W. B. Harvio (34 Douglas), 20secl; R. Cuthbcrtson (34 Rex Acmoj, 35sec, 2; N. Viggars, 34 (O.K. Supreme), 30sec, 3. Time, 0.8 2-5. H. G. Stephenson led for four laps, J. Hamilton and H. Stevenson exchanging places throughout for second and third positions. Harvie was working his way through in good style, however, and by wonderlul bursts of speed along tho back'strait overhauled the three riders and took the lead in the fifth lap, winning by 50 yards. R. Paton crashed going out of the stand straight. His machine was badly damaged, but tho rider miraculously escaped injury after being thrown over the fence. Final. —W. B. Harvio (34 Douglas), 20 sec, and J. Cuthbcrtson (34 Rex Acme), 35 sec, 1; R. Ranby (34 Douglas), 25sec, 3. Time, 5.47. The best raco of the day. Cuthbcrtson took tho lead from a smart start and led Gower until the second lap. In tho third lap Cuthbertson still led, but Harvie, Ranby and Gower were attracting all interest, fighting out a desperate race. In the fourth lap Cuthbertson still maintained a lead, but Harvie was lying second with Ranby and Gower handy. Harvie took the lead in the fifth and a great struggle ensued which kept the crowd on tip toes. The result was a dead heat between Harvie and Cuthbertson with half a wheel between them and Ranby. FOXTON LIGHT CAR CHAMPIONSHIP, up to 850 c.c.—J. Gallagher (7 Austin), 1; J. Kilgour (7 Triumph), 2. The event was disappointing, being too slow to attract interest. Two cars pulled out before completing the distance. Tho winner took the lead early and won by half a lap. NORTH ISLAND OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP AND CUP (rolling start), for machines 250-1050 c.c.; 8 laps.—Tui Morgan (7-9 Harley), 1; R. S. Punniall (34 Norton), 2; W. J. Crozier (34 Rudge), 3. Time, 7.23. Cuthbertson maintained the lead for a time, but in tho fourth lap Tui Morgan went to the front. From then on the race was uneventful, Morgan not having any difficulty in maintaining a lead of half a lap from tho rest of tno field. MOUTOA HANDICAP, machines up to 350 c.c., 7 laps.—W. White (23 Velocette), ssec, 1; D. K. Collinson (2J Harley), ssec, 2; H. Stevenson (2-j Rex Acme), lOsec, 3. Time, 7.8 3-5. Nine starters. Vining led the held for four laps and racing was not of an interesting order. White was riding consistently well, however, and improving each lap, and wdien Vining crashed going out of" tho stand straight in tho fifth lap he took tho lead and won by 100 yards. UNITED SPORTS ASSOCIATION HANDICAP, 7 laps—R. Ranby (34 Douglas), scr, 1; W. Viggars (34 O.K. Supreme), lOsec, 2; K. Uoodin (34 Norton), 40sec, 3. Time, 7.14. Twenty-one starters. Chrystall got away well and retained hia lead until replaced by Goodin in the fifth lap. In the last lap Ranby, by skilful cornering and groat speed, pulled off tho event after an exciting lap. Viggars was fifty yards behind. N.Z. LIGHT CAR CHAMPIONSHIP, up to 850 c.c.—L. Nicie (7 Austin), 1; J. Gallagher (7 Austin), 2; A. U. Sandland t (7 Morris), 3. PLUNKET FLYING (rolling start), machines 350-500 c.c., 5 laps.—A. V. Radchtfe (34 Norton), 1; B. Cuthbertson (34 Rex Acme), 2; W. B. Harvie (34 Douglas), 3. Time, 4.33. Lemon had a slignt advantage at the start. In tho second lap Radclitie took th elcad followed by Cuthbertson and Viggars. In tho foutrh lap the order was unchanged, but in the final Harvie, who had been riding well, came up to take third place. MAROTIRI HANDICAP, 7 laps.—W. Viggars (34 O.K. Supreme), 20sec, 1; J. Gower (3j Scott), 2osuc, 2; L. Thorpe (34 Norton), 40sec, 3; Time, 7.14. Twentytwo riders got away, including Percy Coleman, who made his first appearance during the meeting. Chrystall again led off tho limit for tno first four Japs, but could not ward off the more experienced riders after that. Thorpe was prominent throughout, fjut Viggars rodo ail excellent race and deserved his win. Coleman dropped out in the fourth lap with engine trouble. FOXTON SPECIAL, for machines 350 cc and over; riders to lap 60sec or bettor; 8 iaps.—H. Stevenson (34 Norton), 20sec, 1- W. Viggars (34 O.K. Supreme), oscc, 2; j! Gower (34 Scott), lOsec, 3. Time 7.55. Stevenson took tho lead in the second lap. Gower showed some wonderful speed along tho back straight from time to time and ozchanged positions with Viggars, but the latter was better on the corners and managed to run into second place. CONSOLATION HANDICAP, 6 laps. —J. Coombo (34 A.J.S.), 40seo, 1; H. Tolley (23 Harley), 15sec, 2; H. Stevenson (23 Rex Acme), 30scc, 3. Time, 6.10 3-5. Twenty starters. Coombe took the lead in the third lap and led throughout. Chrystall crashed in tho fourth and had to receive medical attention.
