Hon. E. A. Ransom, Minister of Lands, and Mrs Ransom, were passengers Irorn Dannevirke to AVellington on to-day’s express. Mr J. Smith, junr., of Bunnythorpe, is judging the Jersey cattle at the Poverty Bay Show. Mr McKinnon, a booking clerk at the Palmerston North railway station for a number of years, will retire on superannuation to-morrow. Mr J. F. Quinn has been appointed Commissioner of Crown Lands for the Hawke’s Bay land district, and Mr F. R. Burnley has been appointed chief surveyor. Mr J. H. Henry, who was severely scalded when working in the Palmerston North railway yard some weeks ago, has now sufficiently recovered to resume duty. Mr IV. Hammond, manager in Wellington for the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Ltd., has been appointed chairman of the Wellington Wool Brokers’ Association. Very Rev. J. B. Brocklehurst, Dean of Napier, who suffered injury when St. John’s Cathedral collapsed during the earthquake, received a presentation from his brother clergy at the Waiapu Diocesan Synod, as a token of their sympathy in his losses. The death occurred at the Palmerston North Hospital yesterday of Mr Thomas Ellers, of Union Street, Foxton. Deceased was admitted to the institution last week and his death was somewhat unexpected. The late Mr Ellers was for many years a member of the well-known and talented Foxton Maori Concert Party and Maori Christmas carollers. He was a native of the Wairarapa district and leaves a wife to mourn her loss.—Foxton correspondent.

Mr lan Fairbrother, who, after 17 years with the firm of Dalgetv and Co.. Ltd., and three months with Associated Auctioneers, Ltd., in Palmerston North, has accepted a position with a Hamilton firm, was met by friends and fellow-workers and presented with a wristlet watch and pipe as a token of esteem. In making the presentation Mr R. C. Wallace spoke of the regard in which Mr Fairbrother is held not only by his co-workers, but also by the farming community generally. Tributes were also voiced by Messrs. T. B. Arlidge, M. Eglinton and W. H. Moffatt.
