HOLIDAY CRICKET

WIN FOR KILBIRNIE. GALLICHAN’S FINE AVERAGE. The holiday cricket fixture at the Sportsground yesterday when the Kilbirnio Cricket Club, of Wellington, opposed an eleven drawn from the local clubs found a decision forthcoming from the first innings, Manawatu improving in the second innings to prevent any prospect the visitors had of forcing an innings .victory. The tricky naturo of tho wicket played no smal part towards restricting the scoring, although tho earliness of the season and the lack of practice of both visiting and local teams also had some effect.

Manawatu’s first innings effort of 95 did not offer any great difficulty to the Ivilbirnie team for, although' the first wicket foil at 26, of which the outgoer, Turnbull, had been responsible for 16, the succeeding partnership between Monkliouse and Ward made victory assured for the pair advanced the total to 73 beforo Ward was beaten by Lang. Gallichan theraftcr played havoc among tho following batsmen, while he also had Monkliouse caught close in after he had placed an excellent 68 to his credit. The visitor displayed a happy knack of pulling the deliveries off the wicket and Ilia display was a chanceless one. The ninth wicket partnership of Christophersen and Kershaw presented greater difficulty, however, and the pair added 42 before being separated. Phillips entered only to immediately lose his partner and the innings losed at 183, giving the visitors an advantage of 88. Gallichan bowled exceedingly well and he emerged with tho splendid average of seven wickets for 47 runs. Manawatu opened their second innings with Broughton and Holtz, the latter being content to play the bowling, but, with 11 runs on the hoard, Broughton lifted a ball from Ward into the outfield where Griffiths brought off n pretty catch. Gallichan entered and lie had threo “lives” within his first two overs and it was off the third one that Holtz began to attempt a run only to have his partner decline it and Holtz failed to regain his crease. While he had failed tp score, the outgoer had been shaping nicely. Stephenson arrived only to display his tendency to poke them up and lie was taken close in by Phillips off Ward with his account unopened. With three wickets down for 12 runs, a second debacle threatened, bm Gallichan and Cutler improved the situation by advancing the total to 66. Peculiarly enough, both were sent back as the result of l.b.w. decisions. Gallichan had compiled 36 at the time, but it was far from a good “knock,” Cutler’s 28 being a beter effort. Another fruitful partnership resulted with the association of Eyre and Lang, the latter openiiTg up his shoulders in the closing stages, and his total of 33 included r sixer off Christophersen. Ongley and Hatch failed to give their skipper the same support, and when stumps were drawn at the fall of the eighth wicket Eyre was still unbeaten with 33 to his credit. While he did not open over-con-fidently, he was scoring freely at the close of the day. Crook and Ward were again Kilbirnie’s most successful bowlers, the former coming on again in the fading light to bag two wickets cheaply. Following are the detailed scores: —
